Removing sticky bandage adhesive?

My horse had a hock chip removed a few weeks ago. The bandage came off about 3 weeks ago but the sticky adhesive is still on his fur. Any tips to remove it? I’ve tried rubbing alcohol as it’s worked on tree sap in the past but it didn’t work. Anything else I can try?

Oil or silicon? ShowSheen, maybe? Usually rubbing alcohol will work.

Nail polish remover on a cotton ball or washcloth. Just wet the cotton ball and scrub, don’t pour the polish remover on the horse.

Clip it off.

Do what you can with a curry comb and alcohol. Clip off the rest.

Goo gone. Also at the ER Vet clinic, we have a spray we use to remove medical tape from dog’s legs that’s used in placing catheters. May be able to find and uses similar bandage removal spray to get rid of residue.

Big Dee’s sells a spray for this.

Usually something oily will work. They sell something called Detachol which we used in the OR. It’s a mix of light oils and mineral spirits. Regular mineral oil will work in a pinch.

Thank you! I’ll try again with some of your suggestions.

We had a horse have a clinic stay with a puncture wound to his hock. Along with all of the bandaging instructions, they told us to use WD-40 on some gauze with each bandage change to get rid of the bandage residue. It worked really well.

baby oil works - if you can stand the stench!

I use Starting fluid (used to help start engines) it’s basically just Either a vert good solvent that evaporates quickly so it doesn’t soak down to the skin and doesn’t leave any residue or smell.

Don’t spray it on the horse it may irritate the skin if you “soak” it. Plus it comes out of the can pretty cold and the horse may jump around.

I spray it on a rag, gauze pads or what ever you want to use. Soak it good because it does evaporate pretty quickly. If there is a lot of bandage glue I use one of those “soft” kitchen scrubbing pads. Soak with the either and it makes short work of the job.

The above is assuming the “glue” is on hair not on shaved skin.

Goo-gone which is citronella/lemon oil based works pretty good especially with kitchen scrubbing pads. But it does leave an oily film that should be washed off because it may irritate some horses.
