Hi, so i removed my horses stitches this morning, there where 5 and i removed them. I am sure that 4 of them are out but not sure about one. I cannot sée it.thé knot came out but not sure if the part inside of the flesh IS still in or not. What happens if accidentally a part of thé Stitch IS left? Thank you
The most likely thing will be the body will say it is a foreign object and attempt to expel it. Which is not a huge deal. It might just ignore it.
You mean it will expell it having an abcess?
I am not a vet and do not play one on TV.
My experience is that it is expelled by that route, but it is typically more like a pimple sized thing than a big abscess sized thing.
Why not send a note to whatever vet put the stitches in and ask if there is anything to worry about. I am guessing they will say there is no worries.
What does your vet think?
That they have to cut it open and take away
Where are these stitches?
On thé leg, near thé fetlock, i took out all of them but one i did not sée well and when i cut near thé knot i thought that i cut only one piece but accidentally cut both so thé knot fell and thé rest IS in. I tried to take it out After but it was impossible
No experience with horses, but on myself. I’ve had two ankle surgeries and after both they left in a little piece of stitching.
Both times after a few weeks, that tiny part of the incision scar was a tiny bit red. Finally squeezed like a pimple and out popped the end of the stitch and I was able to pull with a tweezer the rest.
Yes that IS the size of the piece that stayed in. Did you have an abcess before they came out?
Nope, the first picture is minutes before I squeezed it to see if maybe it wasn’t healing because of a stitch, and that black point looked like maybe a tip… and out it popped. No puss.
This was approx 2 months after the surgery, but about maybe a week after the plaster cast came off.
Actually i think it IS not uncommon but i do not know how it IS in horses
I imagine my ankle was a bit cleaner than your horses, and it was protected by the cast forever.
But in any case, you know it is there and you can watch for any infection or if it poles out and you can tweeze it the rest of the way
Impossible because it cannot be seen or impossible because of horses tolerance? Got a pic at all? Can ace be given and then it removed using a magnifying glass or those gimmick but probably would work flashlight magnifying glasses for reading type things?
It will likely work it’s way out. Hot compresses May speed up that process. However I would closely monitor for signs of infection.
Impossible because inside and cannot see
In people medicine, as shown above, this happens all the time. The body should just expel the stitch after a while. I’d just keep looking for it to pop out a bit, and then you should be able to grab it and pull it out.
Ahh gotcha, I’m really sorry I wonder if there is anything to draw it out? Tape a potato to the area? Drawing salve/poultice? Soaking in warm water to make it easier to work its way out? No really helpful tips, just lots of jingles!
I’d probably just try something like Ichthammol. I’ve used it plenty of times on splinters (in me).
