Renew Gold, Feed or supplement?

I’m having a hard time figuring out if this is feed or supplement. My horse gets unlimited good quality hay. Dressage horse in moderate work. Website recommends 1 pound/day. Would he need a ration balancer with this? I believe thesite recommends alfalfa pellets…http://www.renewgold.com/renew-equine

It is only very lightly fortified so would need a ration balancer for vitamins and minerals.

I’ve been feeding this for a couple of years and love how my horses look and feel.

I’d suggest that you email Renew Gold – he’s great about responding very quickly and answering all your questions. For instance, I asked the very same thing and, in my case, I needn’t feed an additional ration balancer or other supplement.

Remember, Renew Gold is a combo of rice bran, flaxseed and coolstance. It is a nice product but not a complete feed. leheath is correct, if your horse is showing the need for a vit/min supplement. You could achieve that with a vit/min supplement or a ration balancer, depending on needs.

If your horse doesn’t need extra fat or calories, you might elect to just feed flaxseed by itself (in a smaller quantity). Depends on what you are trying to achieve.

I feed Renew Gold like a fat supplement, just as I would feed flax or rice bran meal or oil, etc. I use it to keep their coats healthy and shiny and to add fat in my hard keepers or hard workers. I feed it in addition to grain/ration balancers.

If you’re looking to add fat or shine to the coat, it’s a good fit, but your horse still may need to be on some sort of ration balancer or vitamin/mineral supplement to fill in the gaps he’s not getting since he’s not getting grain.

Renew gold is basically a feel good overpriced fat supplement. For most horses, most of the time, I like to add fat, but I do it with rice bran and alfalfa pellets for 1/4 the cost of renew gold. You’d be better off talking to your feed store for advice instead of someone who keeps the lights on by you buying a product. Unless all you’ve got is a tractor supply or something, then I’d probably hit up JB on here. She knows her stuff.

Umm, alfalfa pellets are about 1.5% or 1/10th the fat content of Renew Gold, so not sure why you’d add that for fat? Alfalfa is usually added to increase protein, not fat.

I like rice bran, but the stabilized RB pellets aren’t much cheaper than RG, and not having to grind and mix flax greatly simplifies my life.

I find that my horses’ weights are very responsive to small changes in amount of RG being fed. They are getting about 1/2# right now because they’re fatties, but will go up to about 1.5# if they’re working more or need weight. I do use Equerry’s choice supplement with the RG.

Rice bran is high in Omega 6s - if you really want healthy fats, look for Omega 3s, which you find in flaxseed or chia. Renew Gold is a combo of flax and rice bran - so it balances the Omega 3s and 6s. Personally, I just get straight flex seed.

Alfalfa is high in protein and calcium, but not in fat.
