I’m making a switch from Tribute Kalm n’ EZ to something less processed and lower NSC. I’m leaning towards Renew Gold along with hay cubes. He also gets MagRestore, Equinity for amino acids. What would be missing? I’ve fed Horse Tech’s products in the past but looking at High Point and Fuel they have overlapping ingredients with RG. Thoughts from the feed gurus?
I’m a big fan of Uckele’s EquiVM for a basic vit/mineral supplement. It’s palatable, low volume, relatively inexpensive, and contains no iron.
Curious why Equinity over the less expensive and more useful options of Triamino or Nutramino?
Thank you, Simkie. I’m not familiar with the Triamino or Nutramino. My trainer uses and recommends the Equinity. I’m assuming you have experience/knowledge of the other amino supplements. What’s your experience? Thank you for responding.
Edited: I just looked at the other two amino supplements. The Equinity is a more complete AA profile.
But Equinity doesn’t have as much of the limiting amino acids as the others, and the extra stuff of what it does have are really not in any quantity to make a difference. Really, it seems to be very good marketing and not much else
Triamino and nutramino are comparable products and have looooong track records of good results. They have the stuff that really matters.
I have been feeding Renew Gold and just added a multi vitamin supplement. I live in the PNW and use Equerry’s Choice. I also add a scoop of Remission and approx 2000 units of Vit E (Horse is on drylot). That said, I am going to change to a ration balancer to get her protein up. I have boarded at the current barn for years and the hay is grown on site but this year, it is not very good. The owner does not know what happened. The field was treated the same as other years and we had abundant water but the alfalfa just didn’t grow (grass/alfalfa mix) and some of it is very coarse (—they won’t eat it). Anyway, I am switching to a ration balancer (LMF Super Supplement G) to bump up the protein a bit. I do the baggie thing and it will have me adding one less thing (possibly two if I wanted to up the amino acids).
I have tried her her on the Renew Gold a couple times now and have been underwhelmed. She is shiny and she cleans it up but I haven’t been overjoyed with her muscling (caveat that she hasn’t gotten much work but she is out 24/7). I think she needs more protein and so going with the ration balancer to simplify bagging (no need for multi vitamin or added amino acids).

Start with the assumption that the horse is getting forage only. RG is a very lightly fortified fat supplement, nothing more. So don’t look at it as providing anything significant in the way of required nutrients.
If you weren’t feeding RG, just hay/grass, what would you use? There are a gazillion v/m supplements out there. Uckele and Horse Tech have some of the more comprehensive ones in terms of level of nutrition provided. Supplements fed in the 1oz range are not providing a lot of anything.
Equinety does have more AAs, but it has less of the first couple limiting AAs - lysine and methionine. IMHO the others are thrown in for marketing value, and are in such small amounts as to be all but negligible for a horse who is getting any sort of decent quality forage.
Thank you, JB. And I do agree, forage is the number one component - and I’m a stickler for very good, free choice hay in a small hole hay net. With that in mind, I think I’ll look towards Horse Tech’s products. I’ve used them in the past and I really like the quality and their customer service.
I feed renew gold + Trifecta by Horse Guard and my vet says my 23 year ex performance horse has never looked better. He has been on this for three years now. He gets the gut and joint support he needs plus vit & minerals from the Trifecta and then a cool energy from the Renew Gold.
Have you looked at Eq-Well from Arenus or Platinum Performance?
I feed RG as well as High Point Grass and Nutra Amino (as well as a joint and vit E supp). Horses both look good and keep well on 4cups per day + free choice Grass with some additional alfalfa at breakfast and dinner. Certainly not cheap after adding in the Supplements to round it out but I like feeding way less and feel that my horses are healthier for it.
I have also fed it with purina Enrich (instead of the high point and nutramino) and liked it just fine, however I decided to cut out as much soy/molasses/corn as possible so switched from the Enrich. I was also feeding closer to 4 pounds total a day (Enrich + RG) and wanted to feed less.
Both work about the same just depends on what you want to do!
