Renew Gold?

Do you use Renew Gold as a supplement or as a feed? Vet wants me to start my horse on an Omega 3 supplement, because we are having some skin sensitivity troubles. Right now, he is on Purina Ultium and thriving with just one scoop a day plus his hay. Vet recommended Renew Gold or Platinum Performance. However, both are expensive along with his already pricey Ultium.

My question is do you feed just Renew Gold? Do you use it with your current grain? Is there another supplement I should consider? If you use it with grain, what grain do you use?

My former trainer swore by the stuff. He fed a pound a day with hay, nothing else. His horses looked great.

I know you didn’t ask – but why not try flax seeds, if you want to boost the omega 3s?

Ditto the flax - you should be able to get it at no more than $1 a pound.

Flax would be so much cheaper. RG is mostly rice bran, a little flax, and has 4.5 times more Omega 6 than 3, so I don’t know why a vet would have suggested that for adding more Omega 3.

How much of the Ultium does he get, by weight?

He weights 1200-ish, maybe a little more. I don’t remember his exact numbers from the last visit. He gets one scoop (little less than 3qts) of Ultium 1x daily. The vet had me cut back to shave some weight off. Now he is at a good weight and maintaining.

Not sure why he didn’t mention flax. The Renew Gold and Platinum were his suggestions, to help with his mane and coat. A friend of mine recommended a lick supplement she has her pick up horses on, but I think it’s loaded with molasses…

Given how little Ultium you’re feeding, I would switch to a ration balancer. Any one will do. I’d prefer TC over Purina or Nutrena, but honestly they’re all good enough, so get whatever one you can reliably get and fits the wallet.

Ditto JB. If your horse is maintaining good weight on way less than the recommended amount of your fortified concentrate, he may not be getting his RDA’s of some nutrients.

I feed Renew Gold and am thrilled with the results. I switched from my previous program because of all the commotion over feed mills that also produce cattle feed possibly contaminating subsequently-produced horse feeds, not due to any issue with my horses.

I noticed the beginnings of a difference within three weeks, by two months it was undeniable and we were saying to ourselves that we’d never seen them look so good, now, at three months out, they’re even better. Mirror shine to their coats (which aren’t fading, so far, in the hot sun as would be normal this time of year!), and their toplines look very good (we’ve had to cut way back on riding this year due to all the rain, so I can’t take say our working them is responsible).

In the past, I’ve fed rice bran (Max-E-Glo), ration balancers, Omega Horseshine, Platinum Performance, etc., and there is no comparison and nothing else to which I can attribute my horses’ current bloom. In my area, Renew Gold is $30 for a 30# bag at TSC; fed at the recommended rate (1/2# per day for maintenance, additional 1/2# per day in-work), I consider it quite economical.

The makers advise feeding alfalfa pellets also, but they don’t have to be fed at the same meal (per personal email communication). I feed Standlee alfalfa pellets; my guys are on the smaller side, so I give 1.5# of those per day (instead of the suggested 2#). Previously, prior to switching to Renew Gold, I was feeding the Standlee alfalfa/timothy pellets, rather than the all alfalfa ones. I was told that, usually, horse owners no longer feed any additional supplements and I don’t, either (maker did note that my area is not low in selenium, so perhaps that’s an issue in some places).

I have found the customer service to be excellent, with my emails answered very promptly, so you might want to contact the maker directly. Your veterinarian must have recommended this particular product for a reason. I realize that nothing works for all horses, but Renew Gold is sure getting the job done for mine.

Also, if your local TSC doesn’t stock it, they can get it out of the Waco distribution center.

Try HOrseTech Glanzen 3, its much cheaper than Platium Performance, and very good. My horses look great on it!

Trust me, save your $$ and just use flax or maybe flax with a top dressing of oil and follow JB’s recommendation about the ration balancer. BTDT with a horse with skin sensitivities! Also, try using a fly sheet 24/7, did the trick for my confirmed tail rubber. Obviously something that I couldn’t see was “getting to him”. YMMV.

I love Renew Gold but would NOT use is as an omega 3 supplement. It has way more omega 6’s than 3’s. I feed it but supplement with flax to help balance it out.

Copper and zinc ratio is not balanced on this product in addition to the Omega 3s and 6s. I would never feed it as a sole ration!
