I feed Renew Gold and am thrilled with the results. I switched from my previous program because of all the commotion over feed mills that also produce cattle feed possibly contaminating subsequently-produced horse feeds, not due to any issue with my horses.
I noticed the beginnings of a difference within three weeks, by two months it was undeniable and we were saying to ourselves that we’d never seen them look so good, now, at three months out, they’re even better. Mirror shine to their coats (which aren’t fading, so far, in the hot sun as would be normal this time of year!), and their toplines look very good (we’ve had to cut way back on riding this year due to all the rain, so I can’t take say our working them is responsible).
In the past, I’ve fed rice bran (Max-E-Glo), ration balancers, Omega Horseshine, Platinum Performance, etc., and there is no comparison and nothing else to which I can attribute my horses’ current bloom. In my area, Renew Gold is $30 for a 30# bag at TSC; fed at the recommended rate (1/2# per day for maintenance, additional 1/2# per day in-work), I consider it quite economical.
The makers advise feeding alfalfa pellets also, but they don’t have to be fed at the same meal (per personal email communication). I feed Standlee alfalfa pellets; my guys are on the smaller side, so I give 1.5# of those per day (instead of the suggested 2#). Previously, prior to switching to Renew Gold, I was feeding the Standlee alfalfa/timothy pellets, rather than the all alfalfa ones. I was told that, usually, horse owners no longer feed any additional supplements and I don’t, either (maker did note that my area is not low in selenium, so perhaps that’s an issue in some places).
I have found the customer service to be excellent, with my emails answered very promptly, so you might want to contact the maker directly. Your veterinarian must have recommended this particular product for a reason. I realize that nothing works for all horses, but Renew Gold is sure getting the job done for mine.
Also, if your local TSC doesn’t stock it, they can get it out of the Waco distribution center.
