So I’m having issues with my SUV which I use to haul. I’ve been racking up miles as it’s my main car and we’ve had the transmission replaced and everything else under the sun seems to be breaking. It’s also my main vehicle so I’ve racked up miles. My husband has suggested perhaps we trade in the SUV for a smaller commuter vehicle and rent a truck. Has anyone done this? It’s an Enterprise truck rental company that specializes in truck rentals. Looks like I’d rent a Ford 250 Super Duty. I am on the fence…
Not sure about their truck rental company, but I tried to rent a truck for hauling from Enterprise once and they told me I could not use it for hauling. Some insurance type thing.
I haven’t done this in 10+ years, but I rented pickups from Uhaul for hauling several times.
They rent half tons specifically for towing. I think they said on the website at the time that they were rated for 6000lb, which was plenty for my 2h BP with 1 horse.
Overall I had an extremely positive experience doing it.
I did get one without a brake controller once, which prompted me to invest in a remote brake controller system for my trailer.
We have rented trucks from Enterprise Commercial specifically for hauling. Was pricey ($500 for the weekend) but we’re in California.
Someone I know did this several times a year and was always satisfied. She had to get it from a specific location further away though, a bit of a drive but as she said, cheaper than buying a dedicated truck.

You can if you contact their commercial division. Hertz, Penske and a couple others do it. It’s $$$$$ though
How often do you haul? If you had an equine emergency, would you have an alternative hauler available?
Perhaps find out how the availability for trucks in your area is. I imagine it varies by location and seasonally. It does sound like a good compromise if you only need the truck a few times a year…less so if you haul weekly.
