Back in the 1960s Sunnyfield Farm (Bedford NY, owned by Mrs McIntosh) fed hydroponic oats to their horses. I think that was in addition to, not instead of, hay.
I read that after Big Ben had several severe colics, a hydroponic system was purchased and he had fresh grass served to him every day.
Yes, I remember reading that as well. I think there were ads about it as well with Ian in them and maybe Ben as well.
When my late gelding was going through fecal water syndrome and it was during the stage where it seemed that having pasture grass helped eliminate or at least decrease it substantially, I researched the hydroponic system too. No way I could afford that, but such is FWS…it brings out the desperation.
