reputable rescue groups?

Looking into getting a new family dog. Would like to adopt – anyone here have any experience with rescue groups? Any favorites?
We live on the east coast - Wheeling, WV; so East Coast rescues…

Any info would be greatly appreciated! (We leaning towards smaller breeds…)

Also, what kind of requirements do rescues usually have for homes? Reading a post earlier in the forum that makes it seem like they reject lots of people?

a fenced yard is looked upon as almost a necessity with some rescues. Other ones want you to be able to walk the dog for a good hour at a time. they don’t allow you to keep the dog outdoors, i mean they want a dog who lives indoors with you. You need a vet reference that ensures you vaccinate your dog and take good care of it when it is ill. What type of dog are you looking for? There are so many breeds that have their own rescue groups. you can try Petfinder. they will sort out the breed you like or the size and by your Zip code you can find the ones closest to you. Good Luck.

I’ve had the best luck starting with petfinder.com to see what dogs are available in your area, and then reading up on the rescues themselves. Most rescues are really great, but some have very particular requirements (like the ones Nezzy notes). I’ve adopted from several rescues, but the only one I’ve used on the east coast is Chocolate Chip Dalmatian Assistance League, I found them to be a wonderful group, but obviously dalmatians aren’t small dogs.

Another good way to find reputable rescues is to ask your vet for suggestions.

I foster for Xolo Rescue League. They are a wonderful rescue. And as stated above, they are on petfinder. They do check people out pretty thoroughly and care for the dogs very well pre forever home. They will ship/fly dogs to an appropriate home happily.

I’ve adopted through Tri-State Collie rescue. They have both rough and smooth collies. I think collies make the best family dog ever! No crazy rules, they do interview you, check your references and want to see pictures of your home and property. They do have some on the smaller side, mine weighs about 60 lbs now. They also shed less than a lab. We picked ours up from the foster outside of Columbus, OH, but they have fosters in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and occasionally Kentucky.
