Resin or Rubbermaid shed for hay?

Currently I’ve been keeping a bale or two in our attached garage but its time to move it somewhere else. My Dh is pushing to get a resin or Rubbermaid shed to keep the hay in but I’m worried about moisture messing up hay.

He’s been eying this one http://http://t.homedepot.com/p/US-Leisure-Keter-Stronghold-10-ft-x-8-ft-Resin-Storage-Shed-157479/100652232/.

For a hundred dollars more I can get a wood one but he is against it because of the upkeep of wood and that it’s not moveable. I’ve considered shelter logic type shelter but we get a lot of wind on the sand hill that we live on so I don’t think it would last very long. Whatever we get will have to have deep anchors.

Would love to hear of anyone’s experiences with these type sheds.

I bale & store my own hay… From my experience, you can use the resin shed with a few precautions. Two bales… easy, no issues … but with storage space available, more bales will follow like night after day. If there is no floor, lay plastic down to form a vapor barrier, then pallets to keep the hay off the plastic or floor. Stack the hay away from the sides by 4 to 6 inches. This allows moisture to escape to the peak of the shed. … Most important… vents at the shed peak. that allows moist air to escape but blocks rain. The vent pictured in your link is undersized for hay. An eve vent at each end would be minimum.

Those sheds leak because they have tiny gaps where the panels join. If light can get in so can rain. I have one, would not use it for hay. Whatever you decide on, try to stand in it in a driving rain before you pay for it.

What I would do instead is get one of those metal carports. It’s about the same price and you can put more hay in it.

For less, you can get a shelter that is covered by a tarp, but you’ll be replacing the tarp annually IME.

You can get metal sides and/or tarp sides to deal with blowing rain. I think that something that is more open like that is a better option for hay.

If you’re only storing two bales you can put them pretty much anywhere and they’ll be eaten before any deterioration. But, as mentioned, IME, you’ll fill the space you have if you have more space.
