Rest easy, Kingmambo

Kingmambo was euthanized today.

I’m so sad to see him go. He has always been among my very favorites. He was such a tremendous sire who had such a huge, international influence.

Just saw this… another great one laid to rest.

RIP

His conformation was just about perfect.

:frowning: I bought a Slew mare (for my Mom) in foal to Kingmambo from his first crop. The foal was gorgeous and was the 5th highest price colt at the following year’s Sept sale. He was trained by Mott and was a SW, who went to Australia as a sire.

Many fond memories of Kingmambo. RIP to the closest thing to a perfect horse I have ever seen.

I noted that Kingmambo averaged just 63 foals per season. Was he not as popular I would have believed, or not terribly fertile?

It’s only somewhat recently that stallion books have grown to gargantuan proportions. When Kingmambo was in his prime, that number of foals (possibly from 75-80 mares bred) would have been considered a good sized book.

I also don’t think America valued him quite as much as the rest of the world, despite him standing here. His peak $300k fee is one of the highest of all time, yet many casual racing fans don’t even know his name. He just didn’t get many horses in our “popular” races. Most of his offspring sold to overseas interests, especially the sale-topper type.

He threw the best babies, though. THE BEST. It’s a shame we don’t have more of his sons standing in the US. Most of his daughters are out of reach to the average person.
