Hi All, I think this has been discussed in threads talking about Metabarol, InsulinWise, etc….
Do you think it’s actually helping your horses? I know the above mentioned products have studies. I spoke w one of the individuals at Michigan State regarding InsulinWise.
My IR horses are on a low NSC diet (low NSC hay, beet pulp w an vit/min supplement) and a resveratrol product. I understand insulin levels can vary…,just wondered what others think…anecdotally or otherwise. Thank you.
I did InsulinWise for a month or so. I tested before and after. My horses levels deteriorated.
New Bolton told me it’s a total waste of money. I had to try it while i was figuring out if the metformin was bothering my horse’s digestive system. Metformin works.
Thank you. I’ve read Metformin works until it doesn’t, but I don’t know. We had one on Metformin when he as on steroids. It blistered his mouth. How much do you give yours, and how do you administer it? Thank you again. I feel like I’m watching my money burn.
I did Metabarol for three months on my vets recommendation. I did not test before or after but didn’t see any change in my horse. We’re having better results keeping him on Thyro-L.
I order the 1 gram pills through my vet. I use a coffee grinder to grind them and mix with unsweetened applesauce and water. the applesauce binds to it nicely and my horse doesn’t get mouth sores anymore. I put it in his feed. The causticness of it is why he went off to sort out tummy issues. That wasn’t the cause.
ETA: my 1500+ pound horse (was 1680 when he was in active laminitis and discovered his IR issues) gets 15 grams. His smaller brother gets 12g, but I’d guess that horse is 1350 pounds. prob could get more.
I had a seriously metabolic horse who foundered so bad, I thought I would lose him.
My lameness vet gave me two supplement choices: A) Thyroid-L
(B) Hot Hoof I from Dr. Xie.
I chose Hot Hoof I. With micro management of his diet, limited pasture time, and a grazing muzzle, my horse lost 100# over several months.
I kept this horse on Hot Hoof I for 2-1/2 years. The muzzle came off and he was able to return to normal grazing, albeit limited time; he had his own four acres with his own access to the barn, but he could always see the other horses.
His orchard/mix hay was tested every year, he ate a complete vit/min supplement from HorseTech.
That precious horse lived ten years from the time he was diagnosed/foundered to his passing from colic at age 27.
I never tried any of the above mentioned products because I am of the philosophy “if it works, don’t fix it” and Hot Hoof I worked for this horse.
Chiming in to add these horses are not laminitic. I’m trying to keep them that way. Also, the vit/mineral supplement I am using is KIS Trace powder A/M. They LOVE it. All the other standard suspects have been an epic fail, but this one works for us.
No help with the Resveratrol - I put my horse on it after her Cushings DX (ordered through Bulk Supplements kept the price down, can’t remember how much I fed) but didn’t see any change so didn’t reorder.
KIS Trace is great! My two like it and it meets most of what I want in a VM supp. I add copper/ zinc and and Vit E to mine.
I’m bumping this thread to see if @JB might chime in. I vaguely remember a posting that said the control comes from diet. So…if that’s the case, does that mean the studies are random good luck for the horses who show a response?
Gosh it’s been a while since I looked into resveratrol. I seem to remember it has potential, but maybe it would require a lot more than in a supplement - ?
@JB, thank you. I’m spending alot of money on resveratrol products, but I’m really not sure they are helping. I’m going to ask my local vet to test them and take them both off for a month and retest. I’ll monitor both horses carefully. My vet will think I’m nuts. Maybe I am😀.
