My second dog is about 10 to 12. OD worse than OS. was told she is not a candidate, I really don’t remember why. It was the shelter who said so.has anyone done.? I would do one eye. Thanks in advance.
Occasionally cataracts are seen in young animals, but mostly it’s an old dog condition. I don’t know why your dog would not be a candidate. I don’t know if there was a vet involved in the diagnosis, but I would consider getting a second opinion. It’s usually a satisfying surgery. I would pick the left eye if that has the least mature cataract.
Hey doc B. Thanks. She’s part poodle, a Lhasa poo. She had od when I got her. Primary vet group examined recently. He’s new not usual vet. I too think os is better candidate. Years ago I was business development mgr for human ophthalmic group. Cataracts and trauma. In canine is it still phaco and Ali? What’s post Op like in dog?
Eta, I have referral to canine ophthalmic surgeon. Had to get other dog situated.
Best bet is to see a veterinary ophthalmologist, they will be able to answer all your questions. FWIW, I know several dogs who have had cataract surgery and they have all done VERY well.
There are several hoops to jump through before qualifying for one. One of the most important being that the dog will be able to see after cataract surgery. Also that no underlying diseases causing the cataracts such as diabetes but I assume that’s been ruled out. It is an awesome surgery!
