Rethinking chaps...

So, I bought a pair of HH Simplicity chaps. The fit is…odd. Snug up top and super loose in my calves, but the waist is okay. I don’t have the money to go custom, so I am looking around at what else is out there.

Not chaps, but I am wondering about doing Kerrits Bootcut breeches instead. Showing western dressage and open western shows, would these be okay? Or should I keep trying to find chaps…

I’m a traditional girl! Definitely chaps. Can you send the HH chaps back? The simplicity chaps are crap, I had a pair for about five minutes. Not worth the money. Check out Rods, similar price point and they’re nice quality material.

I have 2 pairs in black. They are the only breeches I will ride in. They are extremely comfortable and look neat. I ride both english and western.

Go to the Equiessentials (sp?) website and check out their Smart Chaps. They are high-waisted zip up breeches with leather yolk, fringe and conchos. They fit like breeches with some stretch and look like chaps. Absolutely gorgeous. Combination of heavier breech material and real leather. You can order whatever breech color and leather color combos you like as well as pick your own conchos. I have a pair and get so many compliments on them. They’re even fun to wear when you go out dancing

Thankfully I ordered them from Riding Warehouse, who has a great return policy. I am going to try them on one more time when I get back from my trip, but I think they will be going back. The fit in my calf was just too weird. Do you know if the HH PMS chaps fit any better? Riding Warehouse carries those too.

They remind me of Champ Pants. I was going to go with those, but I kept missing their sales. Without their sale the Champ Pants are a bit spendy.

I think you should look at what the pros wear. I show stock horses and all the pros wear rough out (suede) chaps. I’d worry about champpants, etc being long enough. Are you trying the hobby horse chaps on with a traditional cowboy boot? My chas are cut larger through the calf to accommodate my boot tops. I’d save up and buy a proper pair of chaps that will last. Chap styles do not change if you stick with basics. Also, the roughout chaps can be machine washed and re-dyed when they lose their color. I can’t speak to the Rod’s stock chaps, but the pair of custom chaps I have that were made in 2002 still look good and my local chap maker has been able to tailor them as my body has hanged due to health issues. If you watch Hobby Horse will have a basics sale when you can buy the chaps. Or, buy a used pair. Black chaps abound. I’ve never bought a new pair of black chaps. I went with customs when I wanted a different color that was not a standard color, but appropriate enough to not go out of style.

Just my $.02, I’ve been showing stock horses at the open and breed show level since the 80s

You could always take the chaps to a seamstress and have them altered. Check the goodwill online web site they have chaps really cheap sometimes, had a pair of HH chaps for $10 a few months back

No comment on the fashion ins and outs of your shows, but I will say that I just bought some Irideon boot cut breeches and I love them, they are awesome! So comfortable! I wear them when I ride in my english saddle, but do ride in jeans in my western saddle. Got them at Riding Warehouse - don’t remember why I went for them over the Kerrits, but I love them.

Aren’t western chaps bigger around the calf to allow for your boots? Versus english full chaps that are worn with paddock boots and so fit tightly…

I LOVE my HH PMS chaps. They fit phenomenal. I got mine a little snug and after wearing them a few times, the elastic stretched a little and they’re perfect. They come in a variety of inseams too so good if your legs are short or long. Definitely worth the money.

Here’s the tan rough out PMS chaps:

And here’s their Smoothie PMS chaps: (they might have discontinued them)

Unless they’re required for the show, I just ride in black jeans. Works great for me. I am doing a show later this summer, so will be having some ultrasuede chaps made. For $250, I’m happy to do custom.

I have Kerrits and Irideon bootcut breeches and I loooove my Irideons!!!

I’m planning on wearing the bootcuts under chaps. I’m in TWH rail classes though not western dressage. Personally, I’m a traditionalist and like a pure look, which for western, means chaps. Finding a pair that fits my 45 yr old body for a good price is hard though. I’m sizing up my HH Simplicity chaps and if they are a bust, it’s off to Rods.

Hmm, maybe I will try the PMS chaps instead.

Be careful ordering the split leather Hobby Horse chaps from Riding Warehouse… I had to send mine back because during either storage or shipping, the metal buckles on the belt got so hot/compressed that they literally “branded” the leather. Because the belt was set on the smallest size hole, the buckle-shaped mark was visible when I tried them on. Thank goodness RW has such a good return policy!

The Simplicity chaps are PMS chaps. PMS it personal magic sizing and are on the Simplicity chaps. HH makes three kind of chaps from what I can tell and all have the PMS as that is part of their ‘signature’.

  1. Simplicity - made of a stiffer Hobbysuede (artificial suede)
  2. Ultrasuede - a better quality, softer artificial suede
  3. Split leather- rough out real suede chaps

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Nope. The simplicity chaps may have the elastic in them but they are a cheap fake leather. The PMS chaps are split leather and then they have ultra suede chaps that do not have the elastic in them at all. They run about $180, $270 and $360

Yeah, I saw your post about your issues. Thankfully mine arrived safe and sound.

Okay, there is no product called PMS chaps. The PMS is the stretch elastic inserts that HH offers in their chaps. There are 3 types of HH chaps, all with PMS, that come in variety of materials- real suede, Ultrasuede, and Hobbysuede- which yes, is stiffer material. Both Ultrasuede and Hobbysuede are fake suede leather.
