Retired pony, founder and severe rotation.

Also, please know that we ALL raise a glass to you for having the courage to send your horse on to his ancestors, instead of sending him down the road:)

This is never, ever an easy decision.

One thing that would, for me, make a difference is that your vet is not opposing your decision. They maybe don’t know your pony as well as you do but they have, often, years of experience dealing with “sick” horses.

For different reasons, I was at a cross roads with my mare after a rocky few weeks of recovery following colic surgery. I had “that” talk with her surgeon. I was ready to say ‘done’ and let her go. He suggested waiting a few days before making the call. He was right. I wouldn’t have been wrong but she did recover.

Vets don’t like putting animals to sleep. If this is the direction everyone is leaning, sounds like you are making the hard but correct decision for your pony.

I’m a lurker who made an account just to comment on this as, like others here, I’ve been in the OP’s shoes and it sucks. hugs for the coming weeks.

My small animal vet said the most helpful thing to me the last time I took a cat in to be put to sleep (abdominal tumor).

She said the majority of the time, she looks at euthanasia as one last treatment that is guaranteed to work. No more pain. No more suffering.

I’d never really looked it that way before, but it’s so true.

You made the right decision. Not the easiest decision, but the right decision.
