Retirement Facilities in Northern California/Southern Oregon

I live in the SF Bay Area and am looking to retire my horse in the next year or so. I’ve heard that some of the better retirement facilities in the area have wait lists, so I figured I should start doing my research early!

Can anyone recommend a good retirement facility ideally within a 3-hour drive of SF (or alternatively, within 1 hour of Medford, OR)? I’d prefer somewhere in NorCal so I can visit often, but my in-laws are in Southern Oregon and I’m there a few times a year too, and I figure it’s a bit less expensive up there.

Ideally I don’t want to spend more than $600/month on retirement board (not including trims, vet visits, etc.). A facility set up for occasional riding would be great, but not strictly necessary. I’d love for him to live in a paddock/stall and get all-day turnout, but a nice pasture situation would also be fine if it was flat, had ample shelters, and isn’t too crowded. I’d love somewhere with the option to get him groomed once a week.

My horse is a has always been an easy keeper, but his teeth aren’t great these days. As such, I’d also need a place that would be able to feed him an alternative diet (soaked pellets, senior feed, whatever) once his teeth are too bad to eat hay/grass effectively.

Thank you in advance!

I’ve heard of these two places but have never visited. Best of luck to you!

I’ve been to her place - it’s nice and closest to the Bay Area but I don’t know her rates.

Thank you! I actually stumbled across the Arbalette website last night and emailed the owner. It looks pretty nice!

Do you know anyone that has their horse at any of these?

Thanks! I checked out their website but I don’t see much about services offered for retired horses. Do you happen to have more information or know anyone who has retired their horse there?

Unfortunately I do not know of anyone who has used these facilities. I have met the owners of the two “non-castle” places and they both have good reputations in the local horse community.

There is a Facebook page that has more places but it’s private and you need to join (easy peasy)

Andrea Barbee at Dreamland Farms in Dixon https://www.dreamlandfarms.com/
Liz Jenner at Gateway in Acampo http://www.gatewayfarm.com/

Both have access to excellent vets and farriers.

Browse the boarding listings on http://www.bayequest.com/ - there are some private facilities that might work for you.

Lucky horse to have such a caring owner!

Thanks!

Thanks, I’ll look into these! My horse has saved my ass to so many bad distances over the years, he deserves to be retired like a king

I have a retiree at MarVal. I think our barn has sent 7-8 horses there for retirement over the years. I think they can meet all of your requirements that you listed. But it’s best that you call Simon there and talk to him directly. If they were closer to me, I’d move my riding horse there too. I like it that much!

Christina Noelting is not a retirement place and not going to be cheap. Both Marval and Gateway are quality places run by good people I’ve known for a long time.

According to her website Christiane does offer retirement boarding, and is probably the closest to the Bay Area. And the most expensive, but may be worth checking into since it’s a very nice facility.

These are good friends and offer outstanding, compassionate care. It is a long haul–near Marysville–but straightforward. It is where I would place my horses if needed…

That’s great to hear! I’ll give them a call. I actually might be heading to Lodi next month for some wine tasting so maybe I can drop by and check it out

Thanks! I just sent her an email.

Thanks! By “not cheap” do you have a range in mind?

Edit: Just got off the phone with her. Looks like it’d be ~$600/month. Pricy, but might be worthwhile if the facility is really nice and given proximity to the bay area…

Thanks! I wish their website had more information, but I’ll just have to give them a call. Do you happen to know their rates (ballpark)?

Circle Oak in Petaluma. Outstanding care with a full surgical vet complex on site. Wonderful owner Sara Malone. This place is immaculate and well run. Not cheap but worth every penny. You will never have to worry about your horse here. They are the gold standard in facilities.

Thank you! I actually sent them an email last week but I still haven’t heard back. Do you know people who have retired their horses there?
