Retiring a young horse... what would you do?

I am confused…a limping horse being trained to WTC and should be ridden multiple times a day to teach it respect??? Yes I read that at the moment he is getting only ground work. Get some Ace or set up some electric fence so he can “start small” and gradually get more and more space in your parents pasture and retire him to your parents house, that is a no brainer. Dr Greengrass and Nurse Blueskies may work their magic in a year or so and if they do well he is still yours to enjoy riding and if they don’t he is still yours to enjoy lovin on. Yes I realize he is an hour away, but sounds like he HATES the current barn so take advantage of the fact you have another option for him.

Been where you are - did what you’re about to do. Horse went home to Mom. I visited. It took over a year and she recovered. I do not understand a BM and a vet telling you to exercise a horse that is limping. Yes, rehab so they keep stretched - but when they’re limping? It does sound like he needs a nice long layup. You are lucky you can give him that and save money. I was lucky too. It was a no-brainer. I applaud your commitment to give him his forever home.

Sometimes Resurpine can have the opposite effect on certain horses and be very stimulating. I would discontinue the Resurpine and switch over to Ace as needed. I also sear by At Ease by Select the Best. I call it brains in a bucket - worked wonders on my high anxiety neuro horse.
