Do the 3 versions fit differently although they are all by Horseware Ireland? Pony has been living in Amigo products for the last 10 years - 66" . Just bought her a new heavy and it’s a Rhino. Not only was the 66" too small but the belly straps on the 69" have to be completely extended to go around her belly (and no, she is not chunky - she is a welsh/TB cross and is built like a typical TB mare).
Yes, they do fit differently. You will get differing opinions on exactly how they’re different.
I don’t know anything about Amigos. I was just on the phone to Horseware today about Rambo vs Rhino fit. According to the rep, Rhinos run true to size but Rambos run a size large, so a horse that generally wears a 75 would wear a 72 in Rambo.
I’ve always liked these rugs on my Arab youngsters but I did once buy two Rhinos in 5ft6 and they were not the same size at all. One was the special Pony version and it was much smaller than the normal version, it was more like a 5ft3.
Is your rug the Pony version?
Here’s to those predicted differing opinions!
I’ve just bought two Rambos in 6ft for two horses that wear 6ft for Amigo and they fit very similarly, I definitely wouldn’t want to have gone a size down anyway.
Interesting. My 81’ Rambos and 81’ Amigos fit very similarly. I’d say of the 3 my Rhino might run a smidge bigger but could be the model (it’s an extended neck). At least for a larger horse I’d definitely go with the same size in all 3.
This is my experience too. My gelding wears 6’3 in Rambo and Amigo.
I tried a 6’3 in Rhino and it was like a tight mini skirt on him.
Both my horses wear 78” Rambo and Amigo—the rhino might run a little snug, but my one Rhino is also a 78”.
The one exception is the Rambo Optimo—which I love for the shoulder freedom, but I have a 75” and it’s roomy.
FWIW both horses can pretty easily do an 80 or 81 in most other brands.
My horses wear the same size in all 3. That said, the Rhinos have a shorter drop and shorter straps. Great for some horses, less so for the large framed, fat, and pregnant.
I found that the Amigo fit similar to the Rambo, the Rhino was way too narrow and didn’t fit at all…
Same as others, I find the Rambo and amigo fit similar and that the rhino fits pretty narrow.
For regular cut (so not the high neck “wug” version), my horses have pretty much worn the same in all 3 versions (Rambo, Rhino, Amigo). The Rambo does tend to have a longer drop IME than the other two, so is better for my round and wide haflinger, where the Rhino and Amigo tend to leave a bit of her belly hanging out. But chest to tail, they all seem to fit the same. I have had to size up on some horses when going to the wug cut as it can be a bit more constrictive in the front for horses with wide necks/shoulders. And yes, as someone mentioned, the Optimo is a totally different beast and runs even bigger – I had a 75 Optimo for the horse that wore 78 in every other model.
Yes. I bought a 75 Optimo sheet for my 75 horse. It’s a perfect fit on the one who wavers between 78 and 81. That particular horse can’t wear a Wug cut at all because of his big stallion crest.
My experience has been that Rambo is sized reliably but that the quality control on Rhino and Amigo can vary, thus the variations in fit. I currently have two Rambos (original and wug,) a Rhino wug, and an Amigo Bravo 12 original. I’ve also owned a variety of other Horseware products over time.
Generally speaking Horseware rugs run large chest to tail, and if in doubt size down. My horse measures a 78 and wears a 75 in all Horseware products.
I have found that the drop on Rhino is shorter than Rambo by about an inch, and the drop on Amigo is even shorter than Rhino, maybe two inches shorter than Rambo. Rhino’s rugs from the last 3-4 years have absurdly short surcingles.
I’ve been equally satisfied with the quality and performance of all three lines. Rhino did go through a period where their plaid rugs seemed to rip on command but they seem to have gotten over that.
I find the Amigo and Rambo fit more or less the same, and tend to run slightly on the larger side. So my horse who is an 80 in other brands fits better in the 78 Rambo / Amigo than the 81.
The only exception is the cheaper Mio line of the Amigo brand, which seems to run quite small.
Dont have any experience with Rhino, sorry.
Pony usually wears Amigo which fits true to size and has a nice drop. My ISH is a big boned 81 and the Rambo could have a little more drop but he has a big barrel so it’s okay. The new Rhino on the pony fits, as someone else said, like a mini skirt.
This has been my experience too- I have 75s in all three for the same horse and don’t feel there is a big difference. He does not fit into the 72 Rambo Original sheet I have either. I would go with the horses normal size for any of these and you can always exchange if needed. All three are good. I used mostly Rambo or Rhino.
Amigo ponys have a different drop. Idk about the other blankets but ive always loved that they do not have leg straps. My mare got caught laying down in leg straps one evening in the snow, ever since then Amigos are my go to!
