Ribbed vs Non-ribbed bell boots

Simple question which I cannot find an answer to, on here, on Google, anywhere. What is the point of the ribs on bell boots? Just to look cool? Extra protection because they put more material between the hoof and an interfering hoof? Something completely different?

Personally, feel like they dissipate impact and provide more protection. Hoof would hit the ribbing before it would hit the smooth portion. If no ribbing then it would hit the smooth faster. Does that make sense? I have nothing scientific to back it up.

If I had to guess, it has something to do with making them thin/ stretchy enough to pull on.

I always thought it was a rip stop measure- if stepped on, the tear will hit one of the ribs and stop.

I thought it was to keep the mud from sticking to them. Who really knows

and here I was, thinking it was for lightness…

I thought it was to stiffen the outside and thereby prevent the boots turning inside out/upside down when in deep footing - “anti-flipping up” design.

???

Oh my! So we’re not quite sure. Maybe it’s all of those things. They all seem plausible. Personally I just like the look but the added bonus of all those things is great too

I think it’s to make them harder to clean so you get frustrated, throw them out, and BUY MORE NEW ONES. :o

I put mine in the washing machine on a cold wash. They come out like new.

i have heard the ribbed is more pleasurable…
