Rice Bran or Amplify

I have a horse I’d like to add some extra fat to. I usually use Coca Soya but that gets more difficult in the winter.

I’m looking at Max E Glow Stabalized rice bran pellets 40lbs for $32.99 and Purina Amplify 30lbs for $39.99. Both it seems you start at 1lb per day.

Which gives me more bang for my buck?

I have tried both and seem to get the same results. Purina does the “Feed trial” challenge where they will send you coupons for either a free bag or $20 off. If your feed store will take those that is something to consider. Otherwise I would go for the cheaper option myself.

I’ve also used both. I think the Amplify is more bang for the buck @ 30% fat content. The MaxEGlo is only 18%. I did not need to feed an entire pound a day of either (but my senior was already getting a large meal of senior feed + alfalfa pellets 2X daily). But each horse is different and needs X calories to keep them at their best condition.

In the end, I switched my base senior feed from Purina Equine Senior over to ProElite Senior. The Purina was just too low in fat for my horse. It made a big difference. Now, as needed, I use a few ounces of Canola Oil to add calories.

If you like Purina, the new Impact line has a senior which is really nice. I’ve switched my horses from Tribute to Impact Professional and I’ve been really happy with both the quality and the results. I appreciate the fat content, I wasn’t able to find it for the MaxEGlo

If you want to add fat, why not add something that is 100% fat like oil? Or you don’t want to mess with it? What about something like cool calories? It’s not efficient to want a fat supplement and then spend $$ on a product that is only 20-30% fat, and 70-80% other stuff.

I’m using an oil now but I want to simplify my routine for when liquids and oils freeze or get thick.

Ultimate Finish has 3 fat % supplements - 25%, 40% and 100%. Renew Gold is another fat supplement. I think CocoSoya also makes a prilled fat supplement if you like that combo, but hate the oil (I get it, like sludge).

You’d just have to break down the cost per gram of fat to get to what’s most economical.

The ProElite Senior is 10% fat. The Purina Impact Pro Senior (which I was not familiar with) is only 5%. For my horse at least, the added fat in his senior feed is essential - and more cost effective not having to add other things (like Rice Bran, Amplify, or other fat supplements) to boost the fat content.

Also, the start/sugar content of the Purina Feeds is much higher than the ProElite (though not as high as high Nutrena). Because I also have a laminitic horse and an IR/Cushings pony, I have to select feeds with the lowest NSC/WSC/ESC. It gets too complicated (and expensive) having each horse having his own feed - I’ve moved to feeding them all the same thing.

My Senior currently only needs a big boost in fall/winter. Once the grass comes in, he’s fat and happy on his grass pasture and a ration balancer (ProElite Grass Advantage). Huge difference in his summer meals and winter meals.

Summer Total Fed = 1.75Lb ration balancer + 2Lb alfalfa pellets + flax
Winter Total Fed = 1Lb ration balancer + 7.5Lb senior + 8Lb alfalfa pellets + 6oz oil + flax (plus hay and chopped alfalfa)

I’m a big fan of the ProElite feeds. Huge difference in my senior since I switched two years ago. I do not have Triple Crown available locally, which is why I tried the ProElite (upon suggestion by members here on CoTH).

Ultimate Finish is not available locally to me

@enjoytheride - I believe most ultimate finish products are available on Chewy or elsewhere online if you wanted to give those a try. Personally I’ve used and liked Amplify and others in my barn feed Nutrena Empower Boost, which is similar.

Resurecting this old thread as I just made the decision to change from Amplify to Ultimate Finish SRB(stabilized rice bran) which is SRB, flax, calcium and Vit E instead of Amplify which contains corn , molasses and vegetable oil. We are also switching over also to Kalm N EZ molasses free feed for my OTTB girl who is a bit of a hard keeper. It is also soy, corn and oat free.
Anyone else steer away from the vegetable oil fat supplements?

I just started my OTTB on this same product! Looking forward to seeing what it does. Love the combination of ingredients.

Me too! She is slower to eat it but she finishes it.
