Rick Dutrow Suspended by KY Stewards

Per Steve Crist, this is Dutrow’s “rap sheet”

With respect to Clenbuterol (which is a bronchodialator) he has the following overages:

April 3, 2004 --NY
June 23, 2008–KY

The bulk of his medication positives are for excess Bute and Lasix and most are in the $200 range. There is a “forbidden injectable vitamin” in 2000 which is probably less the vitamin solution but more the syringe that came with it because only vets are supposed to have those on the backstretch. There’s a lot of silly stuff like failing to have the owner’s colors in 2001 and sadder stuff like marijuana positives, bad checks, using someone else’s urine in a human drug test, getting into altercations and “failure to conduct business in a proper manner” which could mean anything through 2003.

In my book, the big kahuna is the mepivicaine positive followed by the hanky panky in Ontario about the workout. A lot of the rest of it with the exception of the human drug problems is kind of the racing equivalent to parking tickets. Overages happen because horses have different metabolisms, jurisdictions have different levels and people plain screw up.

I’m not defending RD… and I’m not a fan, know him personally and all I can say is “ick”… anyway… stuff happens, sometimes trainers will push the envelope, or there is a mistake made… but a small overage of Clen is not going to make a bad horse win…this horse is a nice horse, that obviously was well placed… just not worth taking the risk on losing a nice purse.

Now if it was Snake Venom, that would make this a different story.
Very well said, Acertainsmile. Clen is a drug that most horses run on - it’s just not a raceday medication. There’s nothing sinister about it. I’d bet this was just a mistake - they happen every day.

Do you really think Dutrow is going to willingly jeopardize the owner’s purse for a drug that isn’t going to work any miracles?

Now, something like snake venom… well, there is only one reason to use that. So, I would take that as a much more serious violation.

I believe it depends on how much time elapsed since the last positive.
BUT he sooooooooo many infractions already! How many do you get before they call you out?

It’s ok to have overages…It just “happens” to everyone. No big deal.

It’s ok to have overages…It just “happens” to everyone. No big deal.
It’s o.k. occasionally but there is no excuse for it to be continuously happening. We know how much to give and when to withdraw. If he’s getting it as an overage he’s using too much, too close to racing and it’s ENHANCING the performance of said horse period. It’s not fair to the other owner/trainers or the betting public. There is such a thing as trainer responsibility. They can push it off on their crew but the crew only does what they are told and if they don’t then it’s the trainer’s responsibility to get different people or only do the meds themselves.
