Thanks -brings back memories!

Memories indeed! I rode in the “alternative” three day in 1980 when they were first tweaking eventing following the 78 WCs. I remember galloping down that hill in the steeplechase…we rode on the “real” steeplechase course…the fences were over my head! Carried 41 pounds of lead too.

Do you remember the last name of the rider who fell at the sinkhole in the video. Her name is Karen and the horse was Killarney. (NOT karen stives and silent partner at the end of the clip)

Bluestone looks such a baby…very dark. He lost his dapples quite fast and was snow white in later years

Just the other day, while looking through old tapes, I found we have it on VCR. I remember us bringing it in for a “show and tell” in the 80’s, and it was the old reel to reel version.
I should sit down and watch it.
Tom Angle

Just awesome. SO great to see some of the icons of eventing out there doing their thing. I LOVED the ride Jimmy gave his horse through the water! A great reminder of what the long format is all about! Thanks so much for sharing.

Snoopy, I had had to look it up, but it was Karen Karkow.

Who was the dark haired woman on the grey that was interviewed?

I went and watched at Chesterland during that era. The entire attitude was different, the way that you get back on an champion on. Loved it!

The dark haired woman was Kim Walnes, who rode The Grey Goose.

Duh, thanks Cinnabar.

If this is 82 then she went on to win this along with two of the three selection trials. She won bronze at the WC in germany later that year along with team bronze.

FYI Karen Stives went on to ride The Saint in germany as well…after this fall.

Wow did that bring back memories - though I could have lived w/out seeing Karen’s fall again. Even seeing her out as a judge for years after, that video clip almost makes me ill.
What I would give for a Grey Goose - he was simply amazing!!!
It does show how very, very much our sport has changed, some for the better and some for the worse . . .

Wow.

While a video like this one makes some of us nostalgic for the sport of yore, I think we can all agree that there’s been vast improvements in the sphere of EMS.

(That’s some really, really sketchy ‘medical attention’ on display after Karen’s fall. The narrator says something about CPR but all I see is someone giving her one or two mouth-to-mouth breaths and then stopping to put her on the stretcher. No C-spine stabilization either – and head/neck/spinal trauma is indicated and she’s about to have a bumpy ride on an unpadded metal stretcher over uneven terrain. Yikes.)

fond memories!

The “Good old days::yes:” some of the greats, Jimmy. Mike. Torrance, and Karen Stives and Kim!and the Grey Goose:cool:

Wow that was awesome. Thank you so much for posting this.

I really liked seeing the HP as it was then- those big white fences at the head of the lake! Was the sinkhole where the hollow is now?

what I noticed was the weight pads. glad those are a thing of the past!

team horses/ riders

Notice all the "hard rubs/ knocks"it was accepted that that would happen; and those who waited to see if the horse was alright had no possibility to make the team:no:; team riders and horses would be “patched up” and expected to complete:mad: the next day. show jumping:eek:
