I went with some endurance friends to ride in Canyon De Chelly Nat’l Monument in NE Arizona - amazing experience! You have to be accompanied by Navajo guides. We brought our own horses so it was a little less expensive (and we arranged to park at the guide’s place.) For 2 days of riding, 12 hrs total, it cost each of us about $110 a day, including tips. Well worth it from my perspective, the chance to ride in this historical, cultural, scenic country.
I posted a story and some photos on it - enjoy!

Lovely photos - thanks for sharing.
My husband and I had plans to visit Canyon de Chelly in August, but some unforeseen health issues kept us away. After viewing your slideshow I’m really sorry we missed it!
(we did at least make Chaco Canyon, which was amazing)
Thank you for posting this. Loved your blog and photos. C d C has been on my bucket list.
Last time we were in Az we only had time to view the canyon from the rim. It’s on our list to visit again and get down into the Canyon this time.
Sunsets, did you ride in Chaco? that is another place I must visit, on horseback or not!
Oh what fun! Years ago I hiked the canyon with a Navajo guide, we walked for 9 effective hours, and I wish I could have done it on horseback, but I was with non horse people. Still, it is an amazing place, and I feel priviledged to have experienced it that way.
No, I didn’t ride in Chaco, just did the car trip and walked through the ruins. I was traveling with my non-riding husband, so…
(Though after viewing those pics of you guys riding through the slot canyon, I might be able to convince him to give horse-touring a try)
Chaco was spectacular, very much worth the drive there. It’s a national monument, so it’s under the control of the Park Service and I don’t know what the rules are regarding horses.
thanks! I’ll check it out. Monument Valley is another goal. i see someone else posted a link to riding there in another thread.
