Riding in or near Carlsbad, CA

Hoping to get a recommendation or two. My husband has been invited to a golf vacation with friends in Carlsbad, CA for Aug 25 - 29 and wants me to go with him. I don’t golf so I was thinking that I might be able to do some riding instead. Has anyone had any riding experience around Carlsbad and could you recommend a place.

Foxfield is in Westlake not that far, Hilda Gurney is also in that area. Those are the ones I know but there are definitely others.

What sort of riding experience are you looking for? Hilda’s place in Moorpark is about 3 hours away from Carlsbad on a “good” traffic day.

I’d like a place to take a dressage lesson or two, just trail ride or ride on the beach. Hilda’s place is just too far away unfortunately. I didn’t know there was a “good” traffic day out there. I went to UCLA and it was bad even back then in the late 60’s.

Also, our friends in Newport Beach are having their granddaughter stay with them in early June and asked me if I knew of a place for her to take riding lessons. I can search on the internet but never know for sure about recommendations on the internet.

There’s no shortage of dressage trainers in the area, but I’m not familiar with any that have lesson horses or schoolmaster types available. Maybe try posting on the dressage forum to see if anyone has any ideas?

If you are looking for beach riding, there are several places in Imperial Beach that offer trail/beach riding year around. No personal experience with any of them, but that’s probably your best bet.

If you are at all interested in Horse Racing, there will be racing at the Del Mar Fairgrounds during those dates. Beautiful track “where the turf meets the surf”.
