Riding pants

Hi! I’m relatively new to riding and am about to go for a free ride. I forgot my breeches so I’m wondering if it would be ok to wear loose pajama pants just this once?

Yoga pants or tights would be better.

Do you have tall boots or half chaps? You will get rubs on your lower legs without them (unless you’re riding bareback). I agree with the other poster that yoga-type pants are a better choice, followed by skinny jeans.

With any of these options, if you don’t have tall boots or half chaps, I’d ask to borrow some standing wrap or polo wraps to wrap securely around your lower leg.

There’s a reason riding breeches are skintight & stretchy.
Same for Western riders in jeans - they may flare at the bottom, but fit tight to the calf.
Loose pants are guaranteed saddle sores & rubs on your lower legs.

Loose pajama pants are about the worst choice. Wear leggings or tights or anything that is stretchy and isn’t baggy. For example, I’ve got some really stretchy skinny jeans that I would be able to ride in if I had to.

I doubt you will need to go to the extreme of wrapping your lower legs with standing wraps or polos if you’re wearing tight fitting pants. If you’ve just started riding, you’re not going to be doing anything strenuous enough for long enough to worry about getting rubs on your lower legs, unless you’re wearing loose pajama pants or other baggy legged pants. When it’s hot and I’m just going to go for a quiet hack, I wear riding tights without half chaps all the time and have no problems.

Yeah I wouldn’t worry about lower legs. I would however try to source anything you can beg or borrow in the way of leggings or yoga pants or jeggings. Lots of current pull on breeches are basically yoga pants with silicone dots on the seat. Make sure your foot wear has a slight heel so your foot can’t go through the stirrups

Are you riding English or Western? If English, tight fitting yoga pants or tights (make sure they’re opaque, no one wants to see your undies…) would be fine, I’d try to wear tall boots, or paddock boots and half chaps, as these types of pants often are slick in the saddle. If you’re riding Western, fitted jeans are just fine. Nothing baggy, nothing too long, no holes etc.

I teach professionally, both seats, and would turn anyone wearing bagging pants, jeans with holes, leggings or shorts/skirts. It’s not because I don’t have fashion sense, it’s because I want to keep my riders safe and limit liability for myself.
