Riding Sunglasses

weird question, what do you think are the best sunglasses for riding in?
I started working in Florida about a year ago and I am a professional and wearing sunglasses while riding and training is super nice, we have white blinding footing that gives me headaches without them. But I ride a lot of green horses or horses having issues occasionally so I don’t want to ruin my ray bans or a pair that will stab me in the face should I take a tumble lol. I want a nice looking pair too since I can always find cheap brand name products and as a professional I think it looks better if I’m not wearing dollar store products lol. I don’t want anything excessively flashy, just something nice that probably won’t break but if it does won’t injure me if I eat it lol
thank you!

For regular hacking I wear black oakley frogskins. They are similar to ray bans in shape but the arms will pop off if you take a tumble. For riskier stuff where my face is more likely to be smashed, I wear oakley jawbreakers. The jawbreakers are truly hideous. Both styles come with awesome lense options that would work for you.

I have a pair of SSG turf goggles for actual riding. They live on my helmet. I hate the feeling of the arms under my helmet and these don’t have a lot of breakable parts.

ETA: These were purchased after I had PRK survey which leaves you hypersensitive to light. I am over a year out and I still have sensitivity. They do the job nicely and were approved by the surgeon.

I assume you don’t regularly wear glasses?

If you do, transition lenses that turn dark in the bright light work very well, from driving to riding or any you may do outside.
They come in grey and brown, grey work best for me.

You could also wear mirrored sunglasses and really look dangerous.

Native eyewear. They have several different tints to choose from, and vents in the frame to help prevent the lenses from fogging up.

I have always used Maui Jim’s. Pricey, but I get headaches from glare, so worth it. The titanium wrap around are very lightweight and you don’t have that annoying edge of glass to interfere with peripheral vision. They also fit under a helmet nicely. I get their thin glass lenses rather than plastic because they get so dirty at the barn and I don’t want scratches.

I love my transition lenses. i’ve also found that titanium frames last much longer than plastic frames, so if I were on the market for nonprescription sunglasses I would look at metal frames rather than plastic. On the other hand, is metal more dangerous in a fall? Perhaps, but broke plastic is pretty sharp too. On the other hand, I’ve fallen off 3 times since I returned to riding, and each time my glasses bounced off my face.

Goodr sunglasses. https://goodr.com/collections/all-mo…_content=Goodr

Hubby is a runner and we saw these at a marathon expo. I picked up a pair for me as well. They do not move around while you are riding. And only $25

Timely thread!
I wore my old no-name sports sunglasses today while riding but noticed that they are scratched and don’t stay put very well when I am sweating, and was looking for replacement.
I don’t care about brand but I want some that will fit my smaller face, will stay put, and are polarized.
I found these and I think I will try them.

Great topic! Do any of these offer “cheater” lenses? I ride in sunglasses but need cheater readers to see my phone if it rings. (sometimes I answer it)… and I don’t want to change glasses every time get on and off… Currently riding in various off the rack cheater sunreaders, but they aren’t the best in terms of staying on etc.

I run and ride in Roka (the Rio with titanium frames). They don’t slip when you sweat or fall off when I fall off, and they are so light! I’ve had them a year and a half, and once I accidentally left them in my horse’s feed tub and found them the next day! Not a scratch on them. Amazing. I got them 20%, but they were still pricey.

You ought to send Roka that neat story.
They may even give you a new pair for using it for their ads.

Thank you all so much for suggestions! Looking into all of them.

 That’s awesome

Completely anecdotal, I know, but I have known more than one person who was on a casual ride and ended up with cookie-cutter metal sunglass cuts on their face. I will only ride in plastic with breakaway hinges now.

My glasses don’t have frames.
They look like this:

The lenses are held in the middle by a bridge and the wire thin titanium very flexible side pieces have never caused any problem in the now several decades I have been using them?

Of course. I am just noting that in the very rare case that you did faceplant, the titanium might stab you in the eye. I am an admittedly very conservative eyewear person for riding, since my sport causes a lot of facial injuries. The cookie cutter eye injuries I have known of all happened while out riding around randomly though. In my opinion it is worth it to get plastic frames that pop off on impact.

I was just about to recommend these! I had eye surgery and hubby is a pilot so we are both insanely careful and sensitive about our eyes. I picked up a pair of the goodr from a running store both to run and ride in and I love them. Hubby runs and rides in them as well.

For 25$, they look great, work great, and will not fall off.

Another vote for Goodr sunglasses. They are lightweight and very comfortable and the lens quality is very good. Also, $25.00! Hard to beat that. I have Maui Jims that I paid a fortune for, but prefer the Goodrs for when I am active and probably also sweaty.

Also, in the summer months I ride with a DaBrim brand petite helmet brim. That thing is awesome. It keeps the sun off my face, ears, and neck, and really cuts the glare as well.
