I know I may get alot of beef for talking about this but I’m hoping to get responses from people who have similar views. I’m 15 weeks pregnant and went from riding daily on the trail alone to mainly just ground work and light ring riding on my rocky about 1-2a week. My question is about the saddle, now my stomach is getting bigger obviously and my main worry is bumping my belly on the horn and hurting my baby that way. I do not ride English anymore so I was looking at hornless abetta saddles specifically the serenity with memory foam. Any experiences or helpful advice?
Congrats im a bit behind you…nearly 14 weeks
I cant help on the saddle issue…im having a few issues there myself. My dressage saddle with my shape change already feels too small and a bit limiting.
Im lucky my horse is as safe as a horse can get while still being a horse. My biggest risk with her is her tripping in our heavier soils so Ive given up the free rein riding, archery and speed work but am still dressage schooling a bit and pottering on my property. I have also limited myself to riding when someone knows or is around just in case.
I can’t speak to the comfort or suitability of the Abetta saddles, but I rode up until about two weeks before my son was born in an English saddle, so it seems like there would be something out there suitable for your purpose.
When I was pregnant, I stopped jumping and stopped riding the greenies and other people’s horses, but I still did a lot of flatwork and went trail riding and horse camping with friends.
FWIW, my son is now 12 years old.
ETA: I think the only tack change I made was to start using a halter-bridle combo so that I could tie my horse to a tree in order to pee as frequently as I needed to.
If your horse is well trained and sensible could you use a bareback pad?
I wouldn’t buy a saddle just to accommodate a situation that will resolve in the near future.
Can you borrow an English saddle from someone?
I rode in my Big Horn western saddle until the beginning of my 8th month. I had no problems at all. Looking back, I should have probably switched to an english saddle. I have to say though, sitting in the saddle is the only time I didn’t “feel” pregnant.
Baby is well protected in there. If it gets uncomfortable for you to ride with a saddle horn (it’s gonna happen), then you would want to make a change just so riding is still fun, but, unless your pregnancy high-risk in other ways, baby is okay even with the occasional accidental light bop from the saddle horn. Your uterus is packed with fluid just to protect the little RBB.
