Riding with a Broken Toe

I managed to break my right little toe today and am planning to ride on Friday. My riding schedule is quite limited in general so I don’t want to miss any riding opportunities!

Does anyone have experience riding with a broken toe?

Are you sure you are up to it? For a small body part, broken toes can be miserable.

Well wishes

For horse people, this is an art form because when you work around 1200 lb animals, broken toes just happen.

Tape it to the toe next to it with enough stiffish tape to hold it in place, and wear whatever boots have the biggest toe box so you have room in there that it isn’t bumping up against your boot as much as possible.

Best of luck and sorry about the toe!

I’ve done it with a broken big toe (chipped the tip after dropping a heavy saddle rack on it) and I have to say, it’s a perfect opportunity for no irons!!! The foot placement on the iron is important and also that you have enough room in your boots. Good luck! Nothing a little wine cant heal after

I’ve ridden with it before - i don’t recommend using stirrups. No matter how you weight your foot in the stirrup its going to hurt and it will affect your riding symmetry/effectiveness. Strap it well and i’d also go the arnica cream and tablets.

Honestly if you can i’d give yourself a few weeks off - riding will delay the healing and if you can give yourself a few weeks even you will be back in the saddle much more effectively.

Tape it up, take 3-4 Advil and go

Thank you for the advice! I’m in med school right now so any chance I have free time to ride, I take it!

I’ve ridden twice with a broken baby toe and once with a dislocated-and-replaced and also broken big toe. Neither was much of an issue as the stirrup is on the ball of your foot. The baby toe I just had to be careful that my stirrup was not angled as usual (outer branch forward at the baby toe) otherwise that toe pressed up against the branch of the iron. If you keep the stirrup fairly straight across, and put a bit more of your foot in the stirrup, it shouldn’t cause any issues.

You might find taping helps you or hurts you - try it both ways and see which works for you. With mine taping the baby toe helped but not the big toe which felt worse taped.

I’d just pull my stirrups. You’ll be much more comfortable. And it’s good for you!

Start No Stirrups November a few weeks early. No toes specifically but I’ve ridden with a broken foot.

Broke my toe last month. Ice and elevation as much as possible, then tape it and advil, and just bear it

I would put a small piece of cotton between the little toe and the 4th toe, tape the toe, put on comfortable socks (maybe Smartwood PhD padded socks) and then ride in a wider paddock boot than usual. If the boot has a stiff sole, you may find it is more comfortable than a softer, trail boot. You might even find this is the most comfortable set up for walking around during the day.
