Riding with a Cell Phone--Where do you put it?

I just accepted a training position and need to find a way to ride with my phone. My new Galaxy S7 is too big for the pocket on my breeches. The armbands always slip. What works for you?

I saw an equestrian brand that made some type of leather “equestrian wallet” that attached to your belt and actually seemed durable. I can picture the advertisement but for the life of me, I can’t remember what brand it was! It wasn’t Rebecca Ray, Oughton, or Tucker Tweed but it was some other similar brand. Has anyone else seen this?

soooo I wear 2 sports bras in order to have double bounce prevention.
the space in between the 2 layers makes a good cell phone pocket.

I bought a cell phone pouch called a “Horse Holster”. I saw it on FB and it fits my iPhone 6+ perfectly. I strap it to my leg.

I use an armband that fits on my leg - on my calf just below the knee. Works great for me. Very easy to access and keeps my phone away from vital organs should I fall on it (so better I think than having it on my waist or a pocket).

I use this one. I strap it to my lower thigh, just above the knee. I really like it.

I think you mean these: http://blackknightaccessories.com/t/rider-wristlets My trainer rides with her Galaxy in one of these.

I am apparently old and out of the loop. Is it not possible to leave your phone somewhere (other than strapped to your body some manner) while you are paid to ride a horse or give a lesson?

Can you not check your messages in between rides? Have someone answer your phone if it rings while you are on a horse or teaching a rider (both of which you apparently are being paid to attend) if you are worried about a relative or friend who is ill?

If you are unable to give your attention to the task at hand (long enough to school a horse or give a lesson) without answering your phone, it seems to me that you have a time management problem and are not giving your charges their due.

Constant availability to everyone at the expense of your paying clients will backfire.
Your time should be valuable, and should be seen to be as well.

Having your cell phone on you when riding is a safety issue! There is often no one else around to call 911 if you are hurt badly, especially when hacking out alone. The GPS in your phone can be vital to finding your dumped, broken body. My barn is small - I’m often alone, even when doing ring work.

And I NEVER check my phone for messages when with my horse. It’s a piece of safety equipment just like a helmet and vest.

As I said, I am old and out of the loop. Someone who has “accepted a training position” I would expect to be at some sort of training barn and thus not to be alone in the boonies. If the OP had said “I am going to train horses alone at my farm”? I would have responded differently, however that was not what the OP implied.

The OP “accepted a training position”. If you are thrown from a horse or severely injured on the ground while training or giving a lesson, a cell phone is unlikely to save you. If it makes you feel better, then by all means find a way to attach it to yourself.

Perhaps the OP can clarify the circumstances that require the instant body contact cell phone requirement rather than leaving it on a bench or a rail while on a horse or teaching.

I hear what you’re saying. But think of it like this: Do you take your phone with you when you drive? Of course, if you’re smart, you don’t ever use it while driving. And it won’t save you from an accident. But it’s there in case you need it in an emergency. And it WILL save you if you are able to dial 911 when needed.

Another big reason to have your phone on you - phones are very expensive and frequently stolen, even from a locked car. I keep my phone, credit card, car key and tack room key on my person at all times.

To me, it’s just being smart and prudent, and minimizing risks. But to each his own!

OP, get some Sticky Seat breeches. Trust me! My S7 fits fine, the sticky is great, and their customer service is UNPARALLELED.

Also, those legs band ones, I always worry about them scratching my saddle…

A totally gross, “TMI” story… but I typically would put my phone in my sports bra. Right under the strap near the top of the cup. But the other day, after I was done riding, I found there was water damage to my IPhone screen from sweating. I have a water resistant case on my phone and didn’t even think I was that sweaty after this particular ride, but it was enough to leave my screen jacked up! So no more of that.

My my husband is currently working out of state and I am completely alone when I ride. Keeping the cell phone close by is just smart. I’m currently keeping it on the rail or mounting block, but that is less than ideal.

I do a lot of trail riding and always have my phone with me. What works great is a gardening vest. They are light weight, have good ventilation, don’t constritct or rub, doesn’t slide down as a thigh or arm band might and they have lots of pockets of various sizes good for phones, treats, gloves, keys and even a bottle of water. And as a gardening vest dirt is not an issue. The one I use is from Duluth Trading.

Fanny pack…although I am old and have a flip phone.

I use a SPI belt. It is not super attractive (although it comes in tons of colors, so you can easily match your colors if you like), but it is light, comfortable and fits a wide range of phone sizes.

I ride alone most of the time and always keep a phone on me. Even if my horse and I are fine, sometimes we see things which are not while out hacking. It’s nice to be able to give an alert to the BO, etc.

I have a leg holster thing that I wear just below my knee- I got it at Dover. It fits my Galaxy 6 with an otterbox on it.

Oh my gosh, I am so glad you said this! I completely forgot I owned one of these from my marathon days. Thank you! I just tried it and the phone fits!

I have one of these too. I love that it’s stretchy enough to hold more than just my Galaxy S3 (yeh, I so need to upgrade) and it doesn’t bounce when I ride. It stays put even while jumping.

I have a Horse Holster that I attach to my calf. I also have a cell phone holder that slides onto my belt. I prefer it on the calf. If I do come off and land on the hip that has the phone I think that would hurt more than landing on it on my calf.
I can grab it out of the one on my calf better too.
I mostly use it when I trail ride or XC school so I can track time and mileage. I will sometime pull it out for pictures.
I have RoadID loaded on it. I trail rode by myself yesterday and used RoadID for my tracking. If I come off in the middle of the park and don’t move for 5 minutes it will send an alert to my emergency contact (DH) he can track me via the GPS.
I rarely ride in the ring with it on. I actually tend to leave it in the car when I am at the barn unless I am expecting a call or meeting somebody. I want to be available in case they are running late or need to cancel at the last minute.
Therefore I am not somebody that is married to my phone.

Jeans is what I wear all the time, including riding.
To have my phone with me while I ride, I use one like in the above link, not that often, or this one, that fits fine on the belt loops of jeans:

I use this one all day long, has worked great for me to have your phone with you no matter what you do.
