Ring worm?

So we’ve been struggling with scabs on his legs since spring 2020. Vet suggested using some zinc

to soften the scabs. Scabs did soften eventually, then revealed sore, red skin underneath. Vet suspected ringworm, we’ve been treating for a month with diluted Imaverol. It scabbed over again, and when scabs came off a few days ago it was the same irritated looking skin.

Will be in touch with vet tomorrow, just wondering if anyone has seen something like this before?

I can’t say for sure it’s ringworm or not, but I can give you another treatment/test. Mix a small amount of Virkon in water to the point that it looks the same intensity as strong (pink lol) tea. Dab it on once a day for a few days. If it magically produces happy, dry skin within a week you not only have an answer, you have a cure. Then the only thing that remains is figuring out where your horse picked it up and using the Virkon to kill it there too.

Caveat - it’s a totally off label use, but I was first taught it by a horse vet for a horse and have used it since quite regularly on cattle from days old to adulthood.

I’ve had good luck with taking some desitin or any 40% zinc oxide and mixing it with athletes Foot powder (miconazole). Then you get an antifungal that sticks.

“Tinactin” is good. It’s an over-the-counter topical anti fungal cream, cheap and easy.

Thanks everyone for your responses!
