My beloved 23-yr-old APHA/QH has been dealing with high ringbone in his front left pastern joint for the past few years. I believe it got worse this year due to a farrier who didn’t know what he was doing, and we’re back with someone good now. It’s been well-controlled without NSAIDs with high intensity cold laser, pentosan, and Legend, and we just started shockwave treatment last month and I have surpass for bad days.
I’m hoping to hear from folks in this community who have any experience with naturally occurring fusion (ankylosis). I’ve heard anecdotally that it can happen, and I’m honestly hopeful it could happen for him. He has already laid down a lot of bone around the pastern. I’m also open to hearing about experiences with ethanol injections, because I really can’t conceive of putting him through the full fusion surgery. He is fit and healthy and gorgeous - this is the only thing that’s getting at us (aside from recovering from the bad farrier).
