RIP - Champlain Rainmaker

RIP…

Saw this on Facebook last month, and was very saddened by the news. Really loved his breeding.

Does anyone know what happened? He was so young!

Colic & founder was what I’ve heard. :frowning:

To clarify, Max died from complications of Lymes Disease. A team of six vets cared for him for four months and he was tested for numerous diseases/conditions. He appeared to be foundering, but it made no sense because he had no reason to be foundering and he had other symptoms that were in no way related to founder. After caring for him around the clock for so many months, a new vet was reviewing his records and noticed that no one had checked him for Lymes. Blood was pulled immediately and his titers were the highest the vets had ever seen. It literally deteriorated his body from head to toe. We would have went to the end of the earth to save him, but by that point it was too late. We aggressively treated the Lymes, but it was too late and we had to make the difficult decision to let him go to sleep. Since this has happened, our vets have started doing Lymes tests on ponies that appear to be foundering and they are almost always positive. When they start treatment the “founder stance” and the pulse immediately disappears. We think this is so important for pony breeders and owners to know, since laminitis is always a risk to ponies during the summer months. We want everyone to know that you should test your pony for Lymes if they seem a little footy or appear to be foundering. If it is Lymes, treating for founder gives the Lymes time to wreak havoc on the rest of the body, which is what happened to Max. He was an amazing pony and we hope his story will help save lives.
