RIP Hansel

Euthanized today at the age of 29 due to the infirmities of old age. Oldest living Triple Crown Classic winner.

RIP.

Oh, I hate to hear this. Indeed, RIP Hansel. What a lucky horse to have such a great life and a happy retirement. He was surely pampered at Lazy Lane.

I saw him last in 2012 at Lazy Lane Farm there in Upperville and he looked fantastic. They took exceptionally good care of him there after he returned from stud duty in Japan. If only all horses could be so treated like a king. Godspeed to him.

Very sad to hear of his passing, but glad that he had such a long life, loved, respected, and well-cared for.
If only all horses…

I was such a big fan of Hansel. When I was a kid I begged my parents to take me to Saratoga for the Travers to watch Hansel. We couldn’t go that weekend but went the weekend of the Alabama instead. I brought a picture of Hansel and tracked down Jerry Bailey on his way to the jockey room and asked for his autograph. RIP Hansel.

I remember him well. Was bought and stood at Gainsborough with a lot of expectations. Commanding a pretty lofty stud fee. The heir apparent to Woodman. Unfortunately he feel well short of expectations and after 5 seasons in KY he was sent to NY for a couple of years an then sold to Japan. Lazy Lane who owned and raced him repurchased in 2005 and returned him to their farm in Va.

Frank Shipp has been the general manager there for years and years and a really good guy.As is the owner. Talk about a great job. Beautiful place would have been my dream job.

Who’s the oldest TC race winner now? AP Indy, no?
