RIP Joey Darby

Joey died this morning after a long bout with cancer. He had been in hospice for several days. He leaves behind uncounted friends, a legacy of good riding, fun, and good times. Bye for now, Joey.

Godspeed Joey. Another of the great ones gone too soon.

There will never be another like him. Rest well…

Well said. RIP Joey, a true horseman.

So sorry for his loss. He was a nice guy. First met him 43 years ago and did a good bit of business with him over the years. RIP friend…You’ll be missed.

What a great loss.

I was lucky enough to learner judge in the hunter ring at Upperville a few weeks ago and got to sit with Joey for most of the week and listened to some amazing stories about when he showed years ago. Man, he sure knew his stuff! He had a rough exterior but was a complete sweetheart underneath. I really enjoyed my time with him. My favorite moment of the show was when a junior rider sauntered into the hunter ring at a walk and seemed to have no intentions of getting going any time soon and he yelled at her, “Get going! This isn’t a picnic!”. lol Pretty amazing that he was still taking judging jobs and doing what he loved right up until the end.

Bye for now Joey

Very sad news. He was truly one of a kind.

A great horseman who will be missed by many!

A friend and mentor to me since 1980, he will be sorely missed!

Very sad news, what a loss for the horse world. Godspeed.

So sorry to hear this. We lost a good one. Kick on Joey.

Oh gosh, I hate to be so grim but I feel like we are losing so many of the wonderful horse-folk from the sixties and seventies. Makes me sad.

RIP, Mr. Darby. Did not know you personally but certainly knew of you.

Ditto. Every word.

We are losing them, and when they/we are gone, then what? Not exactly a lot of horsemen coming along to replace the greats we are losing.

Seriously. What lauriep said. It’s unnerving how they are leaving us.

I promise I am still trying…

RIP Joey Darby. Sad to lose these respected horseman.

May he rest in peace. Such an enormous loss to the horse community…

Sorry to hear about his passing. I remember him from the 1970’s (gosh darn, I’m getting old too!)
