Lemon Drop Kid had a wonderfully long and successful life, both as a racehorse and a sire. I loved watching him race, and after he retired we bred to him three times, keeping one of his daughters as a broodmare when she finished her career at the track.
This is a picture of her with her 2024 colt. LDK really produced a type.
Not to take away from the loss of Always Dreaming…
…But Lemon Drop Kid. What a guy.
Such sad news!
No kidding. My Prelim eventer is a Lemon Drop Kid…
They even have similar “birthmarks” in a similar area of their left haunch. I’ve never had a horse with one of those before and wonder how many of LDK’s get have that.
Here are a couple photos of my guy being his tough, fierce, versatile self, just to memorialize his amazing sire:

(jumping the last Prelim XC fence on a warm day with just as much scope as the first one!)
@Libby2563, I love your pictures! Here’s my favorite pic of my LDK mare.
(She likes to shed her halter, so being a plain bay, she wears a strap with her name on it–even though she’s also the only mare in the broodmare field who comes when she’s called by name. )
OMG look at that foals square stance and straightness….at how many months? Whose its daddy?
Thank you! I’m glad you like him. The picture was taken in April, when he was just under 2 months old.
He’s by G1 winner Happy Saver: Happy Saver - Stallion Register Online
That stallion is delicious! I like his look much more than Super Saver. When you first posted the pic of mom and kid I wondered if anybody was thinking he was WB.
Happy Saver is very good looking and he could really run (and had longer career than most TB stallions who retire to stud now.) But I also liked Super Saver. We bred to him when he was here, but the mare didn’t get in foal. One of the reasons I did this mating is because this mare’s dam produced a SW, GSP horse by Maria’s Mon (Super Saver’s sire) I wouldn’t mind having another one like him.
That horse:
Are you aiming for the fall 2025 sales with him?
Possibly. We’re undecided. May depend on how his 2yo (soon to be 3) half-brother does racing for us.
Best of luck with him.
Thank you!
