If you can get your hands on it, Dick Francis’ biography of Piggott is an honest, excellent read.
Yes it is a good read, tho a long one. Author treated him very sympatheticly… It was so exciting to see him in the Breeder’s Cup. The amazing horses he rode, like a history lesson.
Well, they were friends, so that wasn’t a surprise. Still, Francis remarked on Piggott’s reputation as a tightwad more than once.
There was also the mention of how Lester would infuriate trainers by working a horse faster than ordered in order to assess its fitness and decide whether to accept the mount for an upcoming race. “Sorry about that”, he’d say.
