RIP Penny Chenery

Helen “Penny” Chenery passed away in Colorado today at age 95 following complications from a stroke.

A remarkable lady in the thoroughbred industry in addition to being probably most well known as owner of Secretariat.

I read about her death earlier today. While I was not a fan of Secretariat or Calumet, I preferred other horses and other racing stables, I did like Penny Tweedy. She spoke up about the doping in racing when Eight Belles was killed. Class act… Nice that she made it to 95 before she was gone away, as Coth mag would say.

She was awesome. RIP, Penny.

RIP.

We went to the same high school, Madeira, in Virginia (a few decades apart!) Our school has a couple of mottos – one may have been around during Penny’s time, “Festina Lente” which is “make haste slowly” in Latin. The more modern motto is “Function in disaster, finish in style.” What a great lady she was.

Do you think if there is an after life she is with Big Red? I’d like to think so.

Or at least with Riva Ridge. He was her favorite.

What a grand lady – she seemed so elegant but approachable and real. She did so much for thoroughbreds and racing, and seemed so willing to share and support Secretariat’s legacy. A sad loss, but happy for her long, long life.

So sad to hear of her passing. Loved to hear her racing stories. Know it sure wasn’t easy for her. Very classy woman.
