RIP WILLEM 1982-2003

There are days we live
as if death were nowhere
in the background; from joy
to joy to joy, from wing to wing,
from blossom to blossom to
impossible blossom, to sweet impossible blossom. -Li-Young Lee

‘O lente, lente currite noctis equi’ - Ovid

I’m so, so sorry to hear this.

Hugs and prayers for you Coreene.

There is nothing so grand as to fly on the back of a horse!

Coreene,
I am so sorry…

Curb chains for Coreene

I will miss him, too … so sorry for your loss.

Your strength and courage are an example to me. I’m very sorry and I know about that hole in your heart. Love to you both…

When I Am Old…
I shall wear diamonds
And a wide brimmed straw hat
With ribbons and flowers on it

And I shall spend my social security
On white wine and carrots
And sit in the alley of my barn
And listen to my horses breathe.

I will sneak out in the middle of a summer’s night
And ride the dappled mare
Across the moonstruck meadow,
If my old bones will allow.

And when people come to call, I will smile and nod,
As I walk them past the gardens to the barn
And show, instead, the flowers growing there
In stalls fresh-lined with straw.

I will learn to shovel and sweat and
Wear hay in my hair as if it were a jewel.

And I will be an embarrassment to all
Who look down on me
Who have not yet found the peace in being free
To love a horse as a friend.

A friend who waits at midnight hour
With muzzle and nicker and patient eyes
For the kind of woman I will be

When I am Old.

Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina!

Barney, thank you for posting about Willem. You tell all of Willem’s horsey friends from us that we miss him, too, but we know he’s very happy now, and he’s watching all of us anyways.

Please come back and post and tell us how things are doing at Willem’s howse. We feel like we know you and your friends already, and we’d like to keep up with you all.

Coreene - my deepest sympathies. And my heartfelt thanks for sharing Willem with us.

He taught us how to loff.

Corrine… I am so sorry for your loss, and so proud of your strength. I know Dee Dee will take care of Willem, and will be laffing as he rolls in the dirt. I am so glad we got to know you both. I think of Willem often, and I will always cherish this picture, which was one of my favorite of Dee Dee over the past few months.

Well you know you have a famous horse when people in Heaven start posting on the bb .....it startled me at first, but then I thought "How perfect" because Dee Dee was my first thought when I heard Willem had passed. I hope they have a great time being footloose and pain free. I remember that photo when it was first posted-thanks for sharing it.

Must be one good internet connection they have up there, eh?

I must admit that I am not familiar with Willem’s posts, but send my heart and condolences to Coreene and commend and applaud her for being willing to give Willem dignity in death as well as life. It is a true horseperson who is willing and able to put their emotions aside and make the choice that is best for their horse. Thank you for sharing this experience with the board and setting such a fine example of a person who can make a tough decision to help their horse and allow them to rest in peace rather than dwell in misery. You obviously gave him a fabulous life and your grand care of him carried through to the end.

Please continue to sing his praises and share his voice and so he shall live on!

Sorry about your lose. May all of our other dear friends help him find his place in the big pasture!!!

Just another day!!!

Coreene,
Your bond with Willem was very evident from your posts. I know he left with dignity and surrounded by love. I am truely sorry for your loss.

Dear Corinne,
I am so sorry for your loss. Your horse was such a special part of the COTH boards. We will all miss him.

Coreene,
Please know that you have given us all a piece of yourself and Willem
and we share the loff and pain. Hopefully thus divided the pain will be easier to endure. Thank you for teaching us the right way to love our
very special partners. Those lessons live on and hopefully we are able to provide the same fullness of life to all animals, equine or other. Like those before me, I am sorry for your loss.

My most sincere condolences.

It is such a hard thing to do, I have had to make the same decision and know in my heart that it was the right thing to do but it was still so very hard.

You and Willem shared many years of happiness and joy in each other.

I’m so very sorry. I always read his posts first, and tried, sometimes in vain, to explain to non-horsey family members why I was laughing so hard.

I’m sending you so many warm thoughts and condolences.

My deepest sympathies to you. I wept while I read this and the related thread. Willem will live forever in our hearts.

I’m sure Willem will have a fan club in his new life that’s as loving as his fan club here… I’m so sorry to hear of your loss.
