Roanoke, VA?

Hi All,

I’m considering taking a job in Roanoke- moving from the Richmond area. I currently hunting here and would like to continue (with Rockbridge, Bedford, Stonewall- I think these three are the closest). I’d love to hear what the horse scene is like. Any if anyone can share opinions about life in general- particularly for a single adult- that would be awesome!

Thanks for the help- it’s been hard to find much through a google search.

I don’t know much about the hunting scene. However, my family lives in the area and it is a beautiful area. Lots of opportunities for activities. They are an hour south of the Virginia Horse Center. There is a Roanoke horse group bit I can’t remember their name. Search on facebook-I get regular feeds from them. Good luck. I love the area and hope to move there someday.

Search for Roanoke Equestrian on Facebook. Lots of info.

Awesome! Thank you IndysMom!

I live in Rockbridge County, home of the Rockbridge Hunt. My farm used to be a fixture. The Rockbridge hunt folks are a welcoming, informal group of intrepid riders:) I’ve ridden on some of their trails and hill topped with them once. The countryside is gorgeous, but can be very steep. Most of the horse show people I know who live in Roanoke, talk about the dearth of horse activities and facilities there and board in Rockbridge County. All that said, if the mountains sing to you, you will be happy here. The views are spectacular.

Thank so much Jody. I’ve met a few folks from Rockbridge Hunt and they were all super friendly! I’m bummed to hear there isn’t more of a horse scene right in Roanoke, not that Lex is too far away but still. I have a feeling it may be hard to be a single person moving there (seems to be a very family-oriented town)-- I’m figuring the horse scene is going to be the main way I’ll meet folks (and maybe the outdoors crowd- hiking, biking, camping, etc.).

I think you will do just fine there  Penmerrly farm near lexington has a great facility and Gammon may have some ideas for where to board. One of my friends in the Pamplin area hunts with a fabulous fun group. There are a couple of riding teams at the schools out that way, so I think you will be able to make some fun connections.

Hi HM  Thanks for the info- though now looks like I’m not leaving Richmond (which I am A-Okay with)!
