What is Rodeo Royalty?
Rodeo Queen contests.
You get to represent your group/association for the coming year.
You make certain appearances as the PR person for that group, give TV interviews, promote the coming events.

I’m sorry I am totally unfamiliar. Is it a riding thing or like a beauty pageant or some combination?
I guess everyone is different, depending on what the association represents, if rodeos in general, or maybe team roping or such.
There are queen horses, those that are well trained in several rodeo disciplines, and to carry the flag for grand entries and arena presentations.
Queen contest participants generally are competitors themselves and will have a record of what they have won, have a contest where they perform, answer questions, have a resume of public work, etc.
We used to help some of those contestants with their horsemanship part.
I suppose you could say it is part beauty pageant, and part riding.
The Miss Rodeo America pageant might be the best reference as it’s the top-of-the-top pageant. The main three categories are horsemanship, personality, and appearance. These are the most heavily weighted judging categories. Horsemanship not only includes your riding skills but it also includes your KNOWLEDGE of equine anatomy, horse care, and more. Personality, of course, is someone who is easy to talk to, is passionate about rodeo (after all, that is what they will be representing), and is a good role model. Appearance doesn’t mean who is the prettiest or who has the most expensive outfit – but it does mean who has chosen clothing styles and colors that flatter their body type, who has taken the time to make sure their clothes fit appropriately, attention to detail (did you polish the bottom of your boots? Is your hat shaped to flatter your face?), and who exudes confidence.
Most pageants also included speeches, impromptu questions (need to show you can think on your feet), rodeo knowledge, modeling, and more.
To get into the Miss Rodeo America pageant, you must win a state title. Each state has their own requirements on who can enter the state pageant. Usually, you have to hold a queen title of some sort to enter the state pageant.
So there are many different levels of rodeo queen pageants, from local amateur rodeos all the way up to the PRCA. Some pageants only last a few hours- others like MRA last an entire week - and of course there is everything in-between.
For example, horsemanship at the MRA consists of two rounds. The contestants are literally placed on the horse, and then sent into the arena. You are on a strange horse you have never ridden before and you do not get to warm them up. You perform a designated pattern that includes flying lead changes. For round two, you ride another horse you have not ridden before and you still do not get to warm them up. But you do a freestyle pattern of your choosing (with a pre-determined time limit).
The horsemanship winner is certainly a very, very coveted title at MRA! And very challenging.

Yep, about a million years ago I won the PRCA Rodeo Queen for our local rodeo. it was a blast competing but then went very sour with the city officials - they got mad when I was not able to do the mixers that were 21+ (i just turned 16) or couldn’t do things during the day (sorry, school).
It was definitely a learning experience and something that everyone should get to do. I borrowed my farrier’s cutting horse and learned how to ride big stops and fast spins.
This is odd. If they wanted their queen to attend such functions, then they should have set the age requirements as such.
Beau159 - exactly! The min age for sr queen was 16 and I turned 16 right before the rodeo. if the chamber had several fund raisers at the local casino (had to be 18 to get in) and another at a bar (one of the chamber members owned it) and it was 21+ and couldnt make an exception for underage.
I was very happy to pass the crown on - the next year’s winner was not only over 21 but her boyfriend’s family was a major player (big $$$, founding family in the area) and they but a major boot up the chambers bottom for their behavior.
A million years ago I was the Central Ohio Saddle Club Queen. Not rodeo though.
