What a rider he was! If anyone ever got a picture of him not riding well that would have to be a million-to-one shot. His form over fences always looked as though he and the horse were of one mind.

He will have a lot of great horses to ride now. :green_heart:

So sad to hear this. He was one of a kind. RIP Rodney.

An icon. Back in the 70’s at the A rated Virginia State Horse show I would watch him spend the daytime showing hunters and evenings showing jumpers.

Watching him, you could see how fearless he rode. When talking about Idle Dice, he said that he didn’t make Idle Dice, Idle Dice made him. I always respected that comment.
Tried to learn key points from his tape selecting hunters & jumpers.
A real horseman.

I grew up with the image of him aboard Idle Dice as my inspiration. What a fine horseman.

Was at the Garden way back then. Sitting behind the ingate. He came down a diagonal toward the ingate, directly toward me, with his eyes glowing like lasers. The degree of concentration/focus was astonishing.

OMG. I know we’ve lost some fine horse people over the years but this one gives me the chills.

Did anyone ever clinic with him? Oh my, we were lucky to get three (Virginia drawl) words out of him in two days. And so so modest.

Adding my sadness at the loss of a truly special horseman.

Gifted and hard working in hunters, jumpers, and Thoroughbred racing. Yet approachable and “normal”, for want of a better word. What a loss.

Oh, no. Wow, what a great one gone. Godspeed to one of the best to ever take up the reins. :clinking_glasses:

I have good memories of watching Rodney ride at the “old Garden”.

But the biggest thing I remember is that he was one of the first (if not the actual first) professionals to ride on the US Equestrian Team, afer the rules against profesionals were relaxed in 1986.

This article has several wonderful videos. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://www.theplaidhorse.com/2019/10/08/a-legendary-team-idle-dice-and-rodney-jenkins/&ved=2ahUKEwi8xvjh4JOKAxUMMzQIHX5vNEIQFnoECCQQAQ&usg=AOvVaw1d5gc1m3xvUrB0oeHgQf5K

Editing to add that I’m also going to put it in the ‘why not a tb’ thread.

That comment by De Nemethy is pretty stunning.

Hard to explain what a colorful and yet quiet presence he was at the shows. There would be Barney yelling and waving, Katie directing, Michael laughing, George droning, Joe and Conrad mutely excelling, two or three Leones cracking up and in the midst of it all this flash of red parting the chaos to walk off with the blue ribbon. I was too late to see Idle Dice in action but I can go to my grave more than happy to have watched Rodney and Playback blaze across the grass. What a privilege.

@nutmeg- Same memories except I was lucky enough to watch Idle Dice in real life many times. Norman was in the group you mentioned and always smiling.
