Roles of the USDF and the USEF

I purposely started another thread because the affordability thread started some questions and observations about gaits, judges, USDF that were worthy of further debate.

So if you commented on that thread, please comment here too .

Thanks

If you’ve got problems with how tests are written, how judges interpret the directives, or the high costs of shows, membership dues, or any other rules, you need to direct your ire to the USEF. They are the ones that make the rules. The USDF enforces the rules but it’s the USEF that writes them.

Actually, the USEF enforces the rules.

i do not understand what question you are asking for comments on.

ETA that the USDF is in charge of TRAINING officials (e.g., judges and TDs), tracking points, and administering awards. They also run educational activities (clinics, videos, etc.)

I got a lot of responses from posters in the other thread about gaits, judges, fees, membership dues,
and the USDF. But the USEF is the one who makes all the rules.

I just wanted further discussion.

I suggest you need to look at the USEF decision makers on the discipline of Dressage and the various committees for that discipline…and then look at the USDF decision makers.

USDF is heavily involved in test writing, and is in the process of taking over all judge training - only the “final approval” goes to USEF. As to rule making, USDF has a great deal of in[put into the rules for dressage. I recommend you go to the USDF governance page and look at the various committee reports for this spring to see just how many things USDF is involved with. (As @pluvinel suggests above).

I dont know a lot of this administration stuff and I’m beginning not to want to.

Thank you both for responding.

When you read the rule book on the USDF website, it takes you to the USEF page where you can download PDF files.

It seemed to me that the USDF deferred to the USEF as the final authority.

I am getting the impression that most of the AA members are resigned about the AA situation just suck it up. Thems the rules, if you want to play the game.

There is no other game right now, but when it is suggested that the AAs form their own organization no one seems interested.

Why do you think that is?

The rule committee for Dressage rules comes straight from USDF… Just saying. USEF PUBLISHES the rules, but reality is, USDF writes the rules and the tests.

You need people who are into “this administration stuff” if you want to form an entirely new organization. You aren’t one of them, but you want others to do it?

Thank you very much. A straight and simple answer. I appreciate that.

Not at all. I got no answers.
There seems to be a disconnect between the USDF and a certain segment of the membership.

Some people seemed to think that I was personally complaining and challenged me to come up with ideas. So I and others did , and they were not received well.

I accept that. Mine came from an imperfect understanding of the process and how the organization operates now.

I hope that the discussion stays open and continues because there has been a lot of information and personal experiences that have been very helpful to me.

In a way it saddens me, because it’s made me realize that as much as I love dressage , I don’t really love a lot of the people in it.

which of your ideas were not received well?

And even tho you don’t want to know about the “administration stuff”, I’ll recommend again that you visit the governance page on the USDF webiste to learn what the various committees are up to.https://www.usdf.org/about/about-usdf/governance/

Thank you. Perhaps I will .
None of them . But that is fine .

I wont be joining, so there is no need.
And I wont be making any more suggestions because there is no point.

I still love the ideas of dressage and I ever get to ride again I would like to work my way back to where I was before and maybe a little more.

But showing at any level is a thing of the past.

Unless they come up with a level called
" I ain’t got any talent but my horse is da bomb"

 I don’t know who you are disparaging , but Janet and the other people here that have tried to answer and educate you, are working tirelessly for dressage.

I am an enthusiast only, but many of the people here are, and have been, working on the “administrated stuff” that you don’t (and don’t care to) make the effort to understand.

Don’t worry, there has always been discussion and there always will be, even if you don’t want to be a part of it.

Rules:
USDF, as an affiliate, proposes Dressage rules to USEF. But other people can also propose Dressage rules.
Then the USEF Dressage Committee (which is mostly the same people as USDF leadership) votes on the Dressage rules. The other committees also get to vote on the rules, but if the rules only affect dressage, they usually defer to the Dressage committee.

Any rules for which all the committees have voted to approve get added to the “Consent” list (I forget the formal name) and the USEF BoD votes to approve them all at once. Any rules that do not have unanimous approval get voted on by individually by the USEF BoD.

It does not happen often, but there have been cases where dressage rule changes approved by the USEF Dressage Committee (but disapproved by some other committee) have been voted down by the USEF BoD. So the USEF is not quite a rubber stamp, though in many cases it appears to be that.

I didnt intend to disparage anyone. And I do not dismiss anyone’s efforts. I admire them.
I am not making any more suggestions because they would not be sensible .

Thank you Janet for your input.
That does help a little.

Some of these processes are a bit abstruse to me. They make perfect sense to the posters who are familiar with it.

A member does not necessarily need to know how the administration works. They just need to know the rules.

As I dont plan to join, i don’t need to know.
My brain has its limits.

If you want to complain about how the group is run, and complain about the rules, even if you are NOT a member, you MUST know the rules and procedures. Otherwise, you come across as not caring enough to know what you are talking/complaining about.

First of all is the USEF They are the national governing body They write and enforce the rules.

The USDF, the USEA, the USH/J Assn, and others. are all under the USEF, which is the US arm of the FEI. They discuss, and suggest rules, educate judges, educate the public and members, help organize shows (the shows themselves are individual entities). So while the different disciplines suggestions are usually agreed to by the USEF, occasionally there is a discrepancy between what the member group suggests, and what the FEI demands. since we compete internationally, we may argue but the FEI usually wins.

If you are unhappy as to how things are run, VOLUNTEER. The above individual organizations are essentially run by volunteer boards. with a few paid professionals handing the day to day making things happen.

I bow to your superior knowledge.

What’s wrong with that?

I am on the BoD of our GMO. The response quoted is the reason I have learned to keep most ideas to myself. In the past, when I have made suggestions, it’s been expected that I’m the one to implement. Having a good (or even not so great) idea really doesn’t mean the the person who has the idea has the wherewithal to bring it to fruition.
