Rolled collar with flat part for riveted nameplate

Ah, thanks Simkie. I’m looking at collars with a flat portion for a riveted nameplate, so I think that rules out rounded leather. I think?

I was inspecting my Quillin collar and remembered one issue I have. The black coloring within the inset numbers is completely gone on one number and faded in a couple other numbers. Quillin is $47 total; Fennell is $52 total.

Also, is it conceivable a 42lb, almost 2yo, intact male BC wears a 13" collar? That is what his neck measured this morning. A couple vets say he’ll fill out with maturity. I want this collar to be his everyday forever collar. Here’s a pic for funsies. His name is Keeper :D.

What Simkie said about the difference between rounded and rolled. (Mr. Schaaf is the only one I know who makes the rounded ones in the States.)

WRT the engraving issue, could you take some black nail polish and rub it over the engraved part, and then wipe the excess off the top? There might be something better than nail polish, but it would be really inexpensive to try. Oh! Here’s a link that does a better job of explaining what I mean: http://www.engraverssolutions.com/PDFs/tips&tricks-color_filling.pdf

As far as the size goes - 13" sounds really small - my very small Cardi girls are probably in that range. I think my “big guy” (40# ACD/hound mix) goes around a 16". Are you measuring his neck or a collar that fits him the way you like it to? I normally measure a well fitting collar (super adjustable nylon ones are great for this), rather than the dog. Most of the time, if you’re dealing with a buckle collar, the size is based on a middle hole, so you normally get an inch or two of adjustment in both directions. And also, remember that leather generally softens a bit over time, too - just to complicate matters a bit more.

I know it’s frustrating, but if you want this to be his “one, true” collar forever and ever, maybe wait a little longer to see if he does fill out a bit more? That is the one issue with the rolled collars - on a flat collar, you could buy it a little big and add a hole… not with a rolled. My crew “earns” their nice leather collars once they’ve reached some performance milestone (usually finishing an RE). Till then, they wear a boring old nylon one.

If I was put on the spot and HAD to give a size for his neck without measuring, I would say 16". I measured with a soft tape around the middle of his neck, where his current collar (12" or 14" from Joey) tends to settle. You are right about there being less wiggle room with a rolled. Harumph! I want to do this.

My bulky 75# Ridgeback bitch wears a 17" Quillin collar. I could easily believe a 13" for a 40#, teenager BC.

Quillin also has something on their site about reblacking the letters on the plates. Something about hobby paint?

Eta: also looked up what size Zin is in. 16" rolled, on the middle hole. She’s also 75#, but leaner/taller than my other girl.

Ordered a collar

I just ordered a collar from Alice Reynolds of Foxfire Leather and I’m super excited, so I’m resurrecting my thread. There’s a long story behind it. I drove to a sheep and wool festival just to see Foxfire, after a friend bought me a martingale lead and told me Alice is retiring. I have admired her stuff for years but balked at the price. This is cheap of me: her stuff lasts forever and I keep my stuff forever, so invest well.

The dog couldn’t come to the sheep festival, so I brought his 14" rolled hand-me-down collar and held it up to the rows and rows of shiny new collars. It looked like the 15" was just right. Got the collar home, put it on him, and it was a little small. My error probably resulted from the 14" being broken-in and stretched while the new collar was triple stitched so less stretch and brand-new stiff.

I contacted her and asked if I could size-up. That led to an invitation to come to her home with my boy so she could personally size him. The winner is a 1/2" wide 15.5" long (who knew? and it was the last one!), black, triple-stitched flat collar with riveted nameplate. No more jingling!

While I was there, I ordered a custom set for my sister’s PWD just because and discovered a custom “saddle pad” crate mat that fits Timber’s odd-sized car crate like a glove! Might as well make the trip worthwhile . Actually, the total was super duper reasonable. She really doesn’t charge enough. OB people love her: she makes leather slip collars and buckle/slip combos. Really thoughtful design.

Beautiful drive out to WV, I got to finger all kinds of pretty leather while she gave me a tour of her shop and modeled the processes (so much labour! she doesn’t charge enough), we talked horses and dogs, then Keeps and I hiked a bit in Harper’s Ferry.

My pretty new things should be ready in three weeks. So excited!

Road ID makes a flat tag that slips on with elastic over a collar. You can buckle your rolled collar then slide the id over the buckle and slide if off when you want to undo the buckle.

Thanks to you guys (not) my nice new rolled dog collar with Pebbles’ name and phone number stamped on the brass part, arrived today from Quillins.
Very nice, but postage and US/Canadian exchange made it much more than I should have paid for it…but she’s worth it. I probably have about 20 collars already, from all our other dogs, let alone leashes of every type.

Currently being conditioned and squished, to be modelled tomorrow.

Has anybody ordered from this company?

I’m looking for a good quality leather leash for my corgi puppy. I like that this is a woman owned small business, it look like they make a good quality leash, and the price seems reasonable.

I don’t have a leather one because I’m cheap  I just got some new collars for my dogs that I am in love with. There is etching on the buckle so I no longer have to use tags. I really like the material and they are true to size. The collars I got were $12.50 (plain color) but they have designs for a little more $. You can check them out at www.etsy.com/shop/artisanwork . It only took 1 week and 2 days to get them so very quick turnaround.

Stitch, I ordered my leather collars and leashes from Alice of Foxfire Leather in WV. Woman-owned small business. She’s been making gear for the dog fancy for decades: unfortunately she has about zero web presence. I got to visit her shop where she demo’ed the products and processes.

I need to take a photo and share it on this thread! I can scan and email you her flyer if you’d like to see her products.

Collars from Foxfire start at $22! That’s for a combo buckle/slip (genius design) or flat. 6’ leads start at $26.

That would be great, thanks! I’ll PM you my email.

My dog really did need a new collar, so thanks to this thread I ordered her a rolled collar from Quillins. And a leash. And a grooming halter for my horse because I NEEDED to get to free shipping.

On another note, I had no idea that there was a benefit to rolled collars. I thought the scruffy fur from flat collars was par for the course!

I have 3 dogs so $22 each is too much for collars that will get wear & tear  I love the collars that I got. I was just making a suggestion based on what I bought that I liked. If you want specifically leather then these are not the collars you’d want to look at.
