Rolled collar with flat part for riveted nameplate

Is this a unicorn or does this exist? I hate the jiggling of Keeper’s single hanging tag on a rolled collar. He has some fur but not enough to dampen the jingling. I guess the connecting ring is tapping against the plate. This peeves me.

Does a rolled leather collar exist that has a flat portion where one rivets a nameplate?

Shaaf Leather Works looks gorgeous. Anyone know if they could make such a thing?

Yes, check out R.E. Fennells in Lexington…

They have a website which shows this beauty. Bazinga! Anyone have personal experience?

Guess it depends on how much you want to spend. You could cut some stitches on the rolled part behind the rivets, flatten the leather and put the tag there, for a cheap fix. But the more flat leather of a collar is on the dog, the more it wears, flattens, separates the hair on the neck. A small dog could mean half his collar is flat leather, while a large dog wouldn’t have that much because of larger neck size.

Does dog NEED a rolled collar because of hair issues? Or it rolled leather just a “look” you like seeing dog wear? You say dog doesn’t have much hair to prevent jingling anyway, so maybe just going with a flat leather collar for a flat name tag might be an easier alternative, than trying to make rolled leather work in this instance.

I have two hairy dogs, both wear rolled leather to prevent hair rubbing, tangling their long hair on the neck. They both have jingling tags because the County REQUIRES dogs outside to be wearing Rabies and License tags at all times. You can get a ticket EVEN in your own yard, if dogs are not wearing their tags. So my dogs have the ID tag, Rabies, License tags on and they jingle when dogs move around inside or outside. I don’t notice the jingle anymore, except if they should scratch a shoulder and spin the collar a bit. Does help me tell where dogs are hearing the jingle!

Way too many other things to get worked up over than a small jingle noise.

YES ! for mine and for Trainers’ gifts for their dogs !!!

Do a search on here for leather collars, I think Quellens was mentioned, as well as a few others. There was a 2-3page thread about this same thing not too long ago.

Thanks, Horsegal. I did search and skimmed through a few different threads from as far back as 2012. Didn’t see this combo of rolled + flat.

I could try to cut a few stitches. He is wearing my old dog’s collar , so it was free. On the other hand, I would be devastated if I messed up the old collar. It has sentimental value.

As far as why rolled, I like a smaller footprint on the dog’s neck. He should be growing a man-mane soon.

Why the jingling, when out walking the neighborhood, that subtle but unique sound gets every dog worked up on red alert a mile before we pass their yard.

Not what you asked for, OP, but I use a couple of those cheap little tag wrap things that they sell at the local big box pet store (usually, they’re at the front counter, near the fancy DIY tags) on my noisy boy’s tags. Think they cost $1-2 each, and they stretch to fit over the edge of the tag - here they are! https://www.lupinepet.com/tag-silencers/
I use the round ones, which stretched to fit our bell shaped local rabies or animal control tag. Goofy dog has a charming habit of getting up about 1/2 hour before the alarm clock and having a good shake, which was getting pretty noisy (he’s got three tags - ID, rabies and county) and this pretty much solved the problem (except for the ears slapping the sides of his face noise…)

I like these better than the Quiet Spot pouches (they’re less obtrusive), but those work, too.

(And Mr. Schaaf would probably make you a rolled collar with a flat part (he’s a gem!) if you could describe it to him.)

Quillin makes a lovely rolled collar with a plate:

As leather lover, I love quality leather goods - bridles, collars, leashes, shoes, etc…

A lovely collar sets off your dog like a good pair of shoes sets off your outfit.

And I, too, hate the jingle, jingle of the tags.

It looks gorgeous, and just what you’ve got in mind. I say go for it! (and let us know how you like it).

Quillin or Shaaf? I’ve ordered from Quillin before (flat leather collars with riveted nameplates). Maybe try Shaaf to compare? Plus ZuZu’s glowing review… Looks like Keeper is getting his very own collar for his bday at the end of the month.

I don’t have any personal experience with Quillin, but they do have some lovely things in their shop…
For this, though, as much as I love Schaaf, in your position, I’d go with Quillin’s, because they make exactly what you’re looking for, it’s probably in stock, and it comes with the tag already engraved and affixed. (Also, I think the blue one is pretty.)

Now, if you asked me about thin rounded leather, rather than rolled (which are always a bit thicker)? Schaaf, hands down.

An option if you want to reuse your existing collar - Road ID’s scout tags https://www.roadid.com/Common/Catalog.aspx?C=Pet

I transfer tags between my dog’s collars (she has a couple of different rolled buckle and martingale collars depending on what we’re doing) and it’s easy enough to put on a new tag if we need to update info and they can fit a ton of info even on the small.

The Quillin collars really are lovely and they hold up SO well. They have the best plates in the business, too. Shipping is pretty quick and they are very nice to work with

agree, the quillin rolled leather w/nameplate is a great collar for long hair dogs. There is a corgi sleeping at my feet wearing one as I type…

Uh oh! What’s the difference between thin rounded leather and rolled?

Rolled is a flat piece of leather, well, rolled to make it round. The Schaaf rounds are a chunk of leather “carved” to make it round. From their site:

“The “Fine Round” version is not a folded & rolled collar, but is a single layer of leather cut & shaped to be rounded except for the flat ends where it buckles.”

But I really don’t know if they can make one with a name plate. They say “These narrow leather dog collars were originally designed for tiny Toy Dogs, but they have been found to be ideal collars for hanging tags on any coated breed where you want to disturb the hair as little as possible, even on giant dogs.”
