if I understand the terms correctly, romal/rommel reins are a round braided rawhide rein? And the buttons are for weight and balance in a “bridle horse” to get it from bouncing around in the horses mouth?
if I am incorrect, please explain it to me???
Basically, when we talk of western reins attached to a bit, there are split reins and romal reins.
Split reins are two longish reins, of any material, mostly leather.
Romal reins are western closed reins with a tail.
They can be made out of anything you choose, most are made of leather or leather/rawhide, some have little chains on the ends, anything goes.
It used to be that split reins were used in the SW mostly and in many cattle working classes, romal reins in the West coast, on their more “bridled up” type horse showing.
