Roman Horse Cemetery Uncovered

I just saw this story today. I’ve studied the Roman Empire quite a lot, but never knew they had cemeteries for their horses.

And it’s in what is now Germany, far from Rome. So deployed cavalry troops, as it were.

They say they are going to study the skeletons for information about horses, use and horsekeeping by the Roman cavalry. Talk about an endless rabbit hole of fascination. A life’s work for someone who wants it.

My perhaps harsh & unsentimental take is that - like any large boarding facility - horses buried onsite was just normal procedure.
I did note the one skeleton discovered with momentos left by a caring owner, but I’m sure Roman cavalry had those who were as attached to their mounts as any owner might be.
Still, very interesting discovery & I’d love going on that dig.
