Oh yeah… that’s why people keep roosters around!

Not all of them are that effective, but they will defend their flock against any and all threats (often against humans, too).

I lost a few hens and my rooster to a fox in December… I found the rooster’s body badly beat up outside the coop, but the fox didn’t take him. I have no doubt he died trying to fight the fox off.

That’s their job! Sorry that hawk is without a meal but good on the roo. I lost a wood duck a few years ago to a hawk, wish our roo at the time had been that effective. :broken_heart: Sorry to hear about your flock Tex, sounds like the roo did what he could.

Our roos have different calls for different predators. I always take note if I hear the hawk trill.

A few weeks ago my mom was out of town, so I took care of her critters. She’s got regular sized chickens in one pen and bantams in another. She warned me about the big roo, but didn’t say anything about the bantams. Her bantam rooster went full send on me and drew blood!! He was just protecting his girls but omg was I happy to be done with him at the end of the week.

My current roo, Dirt, is the first roo I’ve ever had who hasn’t turned into a jerk to humans. But even a mild manner roo like he is, he is still very protective of his girls.

I’ve had a few roosters attack me. One caught me from behind and spurred me on the calf!. He was a big dude so I ran.

I had a handsome, friendly rooster. He liked to be petted and he make the cutest noise when he found a tasty treat for his girls.

I lost my asshat rooster to a fox.
Of the 2 hens also killed the same day, rooster was the most torn up, so he died protecting his wimmin :sleepy:
He’d turned into a version of @JSwan 's Chuckie, so I wasn’t that sad to see him go.
But, Ave Atque Vale :disappointed:

My current rooster was the wimpiest of the 3 I got in a batch of 6 Barred Rock chicks.
When the other 2 started sparring with each other, he hung back.
So they went to auction ($9 apiece :ok_hand:) & 4yrs later he’s still here, lording it over my current 6 hens - 2 old ladies & 4 youngsters.
AFAIK, or have seen, he hasn’t even tried mating any. He did dance for the Cochin friends gifted me, but gave up when she totally ignored the theatrics.
