I think these things are pretty cool, but it does negate the “no hardware” benefits of a rope halter if you’re dealing with a horse who sets back.

True. I don’t use them, I have no problem with tying knots or halters staying on and it takes about the same amount of time as doing up a buckle on a flat halter. I could see the benefits of using one, though, if you have a lot of different people handling your horse (like at a boarding barn) and you want to ensure the halter is fitted on properly - not tied too loose/tight, tied wrong, or tied poorly so that it falls off on the way to the barn. Cheap insurance.
