Royal Ascot 2017

Kicks off tomorrow, and this year it will be carried live on NBCSports…
http://sports.nbcsports.com/2017/06/19/royal-ascot-to-make-to-make-u-s-television-debut/

What other race meet starts off with a G1 race as the first race on the card on opening day?
Two US trained runners in that race too, the Todd Pletcher trained American Patriot and the Graham Motion trained Miss Temple City, the Queen Anne Stakes, G1 over the straight Mile course… https://www.racingpost.com/racecards/2/ascot/2017-06-20/672875

Got my DVR all set! Tomorrow starting with the Queen Anne Stakes should be a nice way to start off.

Hoping Miss Temple City gets the job done this year

Lady Aurelia wins the King’s Stand by 3!!! What a filly.

Johnny V stepped up when Frankie Dettori couldn’t make the ride due to injury.

Woo Lady Aurelia!!!

I was rooting hard for MTC, but bad luck seems to follow her this season. Too fresh today? Hope she’ll be back!

Lady Aurelia, nice job  Johnny V was in a hand ride for the last furlong.

Interesting that the gate crew does wear helmets but not chest protectors.

Saw interview with Pletcher early in the NBCSN broadcast. Kinda funny with the top hat but more suit coat and not morning coat  (yes, I know the top hat is “required” for certain venues within Ascot).

I love all the pageantry that Ascot has.

Prince Charles looked “old” (I still remember him as he looked when he was married to Lady Di and yes, I know a long time ago  ).

HUGE field for the Royal Hunt Cup. Looks like the start of a steeplechase!

Cool to see the American trainers dressed as properly for this meeting as they do for the American races. It’s seeing a whole different side of them as trainers and brings home to me the really international-ness of this sport. It’s also cool to see Prince Philip and Prince Charles in formal morning dress. I’ve enjoyed seeing recent “casual” “at-home” interviews with Prince Charles and his sons on PBS and by contrast it’s cool to see them dressed to the nines too.

Hopefully NBCSN’s next step will be to bring us racing from Aintree and Cheltenham.

Me at the Royal Meet, mid 80s, Not so sure about the sunglasses, lol. Prefer my black morning suit and topper.

I have enjoyed some of the “fluff” fashion commentary about what the ladies and gents are expected to wear in the Royal Enclosure. How hats should fit, what colors, dress length, morning coat colors, etc.

Yes, love seeing all the trainers in their Ascot finery in the Royal Enclosure.

More than impressed that the Queen opened Parliament in a royal blue dress but changed to a lovely butter yellow hat with match coat and pretty floral print dress for Ascot.

Highland Reel… what a gutty finish.

Con Te Partiro), a bit of a longshot for Wesley Ward with a great finish.

The one straight mile course is amazing. It isn’t flat and it is very wide (enough for 24+ horses.)

Interesting to see the width come into play with where the is course running the best… left, center, right.

In the Sandringham Handicap, only 3 of I think 24 horses took the right, the rest of the pack was on the left. I thought Con Te Partiro was in deep trouble early, very far back. Rode Rain Goddess’s rear all the way up from the back of the pack to win.

Also liked seeing the farrier reset a shoe behind the starting gate with his nice black shoes, trousers, white shirt and tie (and farrier’s apron).

gumtree, I think your dress would be more than suitable for the Royal Enclosure assuming you have black shoes  You have a tie so good there as well

However, I’ve not seen any grey top hats and not many grey morning coats this year.

A change this year is that jumpsuits may be worn by the ladies as long as it is ankle length and tops/midriff rules same as the dresses (strapless, off the shoulder, halter, spaghetti straps, bare midriff not permitted.)

For the curious, with a nice style guide including plenty of photos

There was also a custom globe designed for Ascot this year with designs to reflect the international flavour of the meet.

If you look closely it looks like this from another year I was there, one of many. Everybody is subject to a “dress code” check when entering. Even the “scoops” the people who clean up after the horses in the ring are dressed “proper”, White coats, ties, etc. I love England and Ireland too. Grey was pretty popular in the 80s. As I said I far prefer my Black. Anybody want a Grey morning suit? 40 long, 31-34 trousers.

gumtree, very cool that you’ve been there. Even today your outfit would pass inspection

One of the iSky TV guys (I think that’s who it was), went to a haberdashery to get outfitted… dark (black?) morning coat, cream vest (is that the right word?), white shirt, pale blue tie, black top hat, looked like dark grey trousers with light grey pin striping and, of course, black shoes

Where you connected to a horse running? The above is surely a sentimental collector’s item (at least it would be for me if I’d been there  ).

I think the whole pageantry thing with the Royal Ascot meet is so awesome.

I’m still waiting to see Pletcher (forget when his horses are running and can’t find the UK equivalent of Equibase  ) to see how he cleans up after his flight. The interview on Tuesday was about 6 hours after he landed and I’d guess that at least he and Johnny V were on the same flight as Johnny said after he cleared customs there were a number of messages on his phone to ride Lady Aurelia among others as Dettori was off his mounts this week.

Wesley Ward just fits right in

Today’s highlight race was the Gold Cup which, when won, includes a custom designed gold trophy presented by the Queen. 2 1/2 miles with a photo finish! Great race! Won by Big Orange.

Check out the pedigrees on the two photo-finishers at 20 furlongs in a Group 1 race at the most prestigious venue in the world:

Big Orange is tail female to Fair Play’s dam.

Order of St. George is tail female to Friar’s Carse.

They both inherited great MtDNA.

Kinda like Conquest Mo Money did?

Replay of the Gold Cup… http://www.nbcsports.com/video/big-orange-wins-gold-cup-2017-royal-ascot

Cracker of a race. You’d have to say that Order of St George, or his jockey Ryan Moore, left that one behind them though, to lose by a nose hair, after giving away so much ground coming around the field. What a sickener.

Btw, the ITV camera work is something else though. All those cool angles… the close ups on the back stretch, the moving camera the moves with the horses as the go past the stands the first time. Check out the replay above.

I’m not nearly as educated about racing as the usual posters of this board, but I’ve been struck by the huge presence of Sadler’s Wells and especially through his son Galileo amongst winners of big races across the pond. Big Orange stands out because he doesn’t have that influence.

If my memory serves, last year’s Arc de Triomphe showed that breeding in the first three finishers, and at the Curragh many successful runners with that blood. Highland Reel was notable there too!

Feel free to educate me

Sadler’s Wells is a huge success for turf and jump horses. If you like sport horses and thoroughbreds with talent; find something with Sadlers Wells up close! Probably the most prolific sire of turf horses, aside from Galileo, and horses with great success over hurdles.

it is really no surprise that Galileo is such a huge success given his sire, they are both carbon copies of each other. Stunning conformation, bone and type.

Its really a shame that there is very limited amounts of this blood available to north americans; we need more Galileo and Sadlers Wells!

Some that are available in north America:

Perfect Soul: By Sadlers Wells out of a mare by Secretariat, stands at Darby Dan in KY. He is one of my favorite stallions available today and he is quickly aging. He will be 20 next year!

Noble Mission, By Galileo out of a Danehill mare, stands at Lanes End for 25,000.
http://www.pedigreequery.com/noble+mission2

Northern Spur, by Sadlers Wells out of a Rheingold mare, was last standing Dutchess View/Metropolitan
Stud in NY

High Chaparral was available but was Euth in 2014

Powerscourt stood in Kentucky but was shipped to Turkey.

Bullet Train is available, too, and reasonably, at Crestwood in KY. He’s by Sadler’s Wells out of Kind (Danehill) and 3/4 to Frankel. I sent a mare to him, but alas, no foal, which has become the story of my life.
