Royal Ascot 2018

Wouldn’t you just love to know what the occupants of the third carriage were talking about? All those smiles and hand gestures? Looked like they were having a great time.

I love the Royal Procession. Queen Elizabeth looked lovely, as always, in her canary yellow dress, gloves (always) and handbag.

Forget-their-title Harry and Meghan (sp?) were there as well and made one of the trophy presentations.

Love that QE was in the saddling ring for her horse in the last race of the day.

Great racing all day… some favorites and a few long shots.

Lady Aurelia just didn’t have it today :frowning:

On to Wednesday.

“The actress formerly known as Meghan” – Nick Luck this morning.

She and Harry are now the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (he is also still Prince Harry).

Todd Pletcher has a 3yo running on Friday. Gidu, gr c (Frankel x Manerbe by Unbridled’s Song)

Given that the Queen never carries money, I am always slightly puzzled by the handbag. She never seems to get messy hair or needs to blow her nose in public either. So what goes into that bag?

I Googled that, Willesdon, because you got me curious. There are several theories, according to web articles. Two that reminded me of something I heard years ago agree that that she uses it to signal her staff, e.g., if she wants to end a conversation, she will place it on the floor, or switch it from one arm to the other.

Other theories are that she carries reading glasses, lipstick, a handkerchief, a compact, etc., but it all seems to be theories. I bet only her ladies-in-waiting know for sure!

This morning I enjoyed seeing the Prince of Wales and other men tipping their hats when they greeted acquaintances. When I was growing up men still wore hats (although none I knew wore toppers!) and they would tip their hats when greeting acquaintances, or even remove them when talking with women. Like Chief Gillespie on In the Heat of the Night.

I never see even older men tip their baseball caps to women these days. It’s nice to see men not only well dressed but knowing what to do with their headgear!

Hemp Hemp Hurray running in the upcoming Jersey Stakes.

Are they trying to express their opinion about the legalization of pot?

Does she have a cellphone?

Cowboys still tip their hats.

I have also heard she uses it to signal people but I think some of us just enjoy having something to hold onto. I would imagine that she is not much different than many of us ladies and has her lipstick, maybe a hair comb, and any other necessities she likes to carry.

No cowboys where I live.

I love it when the horse I pick wins the big race! Yay!

Stradivarius… what a neat, game little horse. Under a mostly hand ride to take the Gold Cup.

Loved QE’s pink coat and hat today. Love that she still goes down to the prize giving for the Gold Cup. Great race!

Shang Shang Shang in the Norfolk Stakes (G2, 5f) got Wesley Ward on the map for this year. Impressive in that this was Shang Shang Shang’s (Shanghai Bobby) second career start after a Keeneland MSW at 4.5 furlongs! Only filly in the 10 horse field.

Nice to see WW in the winner’s circle after Lady Aurelia and Chelsea Cloisters didn’t deliver earlier this week.

Amazing that a professional host on a national network show with the rep The Today Show has isn’t briefed on the meaning of “morning dress” before she’s sent to cover Royal Ascot for US viewers. Let alone admit it on live TV.

That is sad given that the Today Show’s network is the primary broadcaster in the US market

Today the Queen was in lovely spring green with pink flowers on her hat. Don’t usually get to see her dress but supposedly had flowers embroidered on it. The punters even take bets on what color the Queen will be wearing the next day

Today I watched NBCSN vs TVG (glad I DVR them both). While, in general, I much prefer TVG coverage over NBC, for Royal Ascot I’ll take NBC  They have some of the usual “fashion” drivel but at least not with Johnny and Tara which I gladly skip over. The biggest difference (don’t know if it’s some sort of exclusivity or just strictly cost), TVG’s itv coverage is less than NBC’s. For example, in the walking ring, NBC broadcasts the itv handicapper as she walks along side the horses… TVG does their own. Same with the post race winner’s ceremonies… NBC broadcasts itv while TVG does their own (and they can’t get their cameras as up close as itv can).

Tomorrow, Saturday, is the last day and coverage will be on NBC (not NBCSN).

Yes, and Saturday’s coverage starts at 9:00 am EST, with the Royal Procession. I’m thinking maybe a brighter blue tomorrow?

Nope, no blue. Bright spring green print on ivory silk. ivory hat and gloves, light green feathers in the band on the front half of the hat, which appears to be straw,. Rather bright and young looking, very pretty.

Seem to be having quite decent weather this year as well.

Shanghai Bobby is so drop dead gorgeous.

Sometimes it helps the audience to connect with the host when the host is genuine rather than trying to fake knowing everything. Although I do not watch TV much so did not see what was said.

Many many moons ago I was dating an Irishman who’s sister was getting married and he had to wear morning dress, and my first thought was “does that mean putting a bathrobe over your pajamas?”

She’s describing the event to American audience who don’t have a clue. I found it a little excessive that even lady trainers sport afternoon cocktail type dresses and fascinators, couldnt see the shoes…white low heeled pump?

Wonder how many male trainers get their top hats knocked off?

And OMG that was some wreck in the gate, could have been a disaster. Top hats off to the starter who correctly opened the gate to avoid worse when it became obvious the horse wasn’t going to settle and was liable to flip or end up further under the gate before they coukd get him under control to back him out… Bet the horse is getting some bruises iced back at the barn and some x rays and the jock getting his adrenaline leveled off after that one. Surprised he stayed on and made the call before not surprisingly folding. Nasty. Harry Angel was the horse, I think. Pretty wound up going to the post.

Dylan Dreyer’s pink Saturday dress is absolutely beautiful. So becoming!
