Rumba, inaugural Derby winner, where is he?

Just curious…where is Rumba now? Was looking at some old videos and he and John French popped into view.

Steven Spielberg’s daughter owned him for a while after that I think.

According to his USEF records Destry Spielberg is still the owner of record. She last showed him in 2015 in the AOs.

I saw her show him in the juniors shortly after she bought them. It looked like he was being very good for her.

The funniest part was that her dad was there, doing the typical horse show dad thing of videoing her rounds with his little camera. I couldn’t help but wonder if his horse show dad videos were tremendously different from the typical horse show dad video. Lol.

We were at a show where Destry’s dad was videoing her. One of our barn dads noted that Destry’s videos were probably going to be a lot nicer than his daughter’s.

He probably edited the videos with fancy text, voiceovers, and action sounds!

I would love to have a Spielberg edition of my horse show rounds LOL.

My mom has gotten a lot better over the years with videoing, but holy cow we have some Blair Witch Editions. My favorite is when something cringe-worthy happens and you hear the gasp and the camera jerks upwards suddenly for a second and then it comes back after whatever happened.

It made it difficult to learn from my mistakes😆

Maybe a dinosaur or two wandering by in the background. Lol.

I have a video where my mom filmed the wrong child for nearly an entire flat class. The horse wasn’t even the same color, like not even close. I’m pretty sure that’s why my next mount was a paint…so she’d always recognize me in a class!

Thank you for prompting me to go watch his derby finals rounds again, truly a thing of beauty! If you have never watched them, do yourself a favor - this has multiple rounds https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaKaLwvIOCg and this has just the final round under the lights, which was so brilliant and so handy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8-XIlOnpP8

@Ponyplusaninch, yes! I was always so irked when I couldn’t see myself when things went wrong!

And @Indy, my mom hated it when we had to stop showing my App bc she couldn’t find the QH in the viewfinder

Lots of whinnying. Hollywood always makes horses whinny.

She posted some photos of him in retirement a year or so ago. He looks good!

Aww. That’s nice to know!

Do you remember where you saw the pictures?

Edited to add: I’m sure the derby finals would have taken off anyway, but it certainly did not hurt to have such a nice horse win the finals the first time out to set a precedent for the future.

@Indy, somewhere I still have a VHS from my first show with my first horse. It was just a 4-H showmanship class - so one horse in the ring at a time - and my dad still somehow managed to film the wrong horse/kid! Not only was the horse the wrong color (black - mine was chestnut), but my horse was an Arab cross, and I was showing him hunter style. We stood out like a sore thumb in a 20+ horse class of western style Quarter Horses, and yet…:joy:

Thanks everyone. Speaking of videos. I have thousands of super 8 reels that were transferred to VHS then to DVD, from every horse show I was ever in, in Europe. They are priceless. Keep your pics and videos in a safe place. They cannot be replaced.

I always thought the velociraptors sounded like mares squealing at each other. With Spielberg’s daughter being a rider maybe there’s actually some truth in this.

Could be. I think I read somewhere that they used a mix of different animal sounds for them. So there could be some mares in there, for sure! Lol.
